My current system is 260 lbs of dog. ^_^
I have heard of some stuff available for auto windows. It's a film applied like window tint, but it makes it nearly impossible to get through, short of an axe and lots of time. I'll see if I can dig up the link.

Take a look at this: http://www.shattergard.com/home.html

Click on BurglarGARD.

This may be a growth industry. I suspect there are a number of other makes and vendors too.

Excellent link, thanks.  I had the same worries too, for any kind of Rodney King / Katrina type disaster where you want to keep boarders out.  The best I could think of, that would be affordable, is just to cut 1/2" sheets of plywood to fit ground floor windows and then stash them somewhere.  Then, in extremis you could board up your first floor from the inside.

I used to be in the habit of leaving used targets sitting on the dashboard of my truck...

Cop asked me about that one time as I was stopped on my way to Baltimore,  and I told him,  "That's my anti-theft device".  And he grinned.

what do you do to cover windows from intruders who want to take what you have?

I used glass block for my basement windows. For 2x3 foot openings, I paid $160 per opening, installed, plus $60 for the permit for the whole house.

My first floor windows are all 5+ feet off the ground. I don't worry about them too much, since my doors are a bigger security-risk for now (as they are in most houses). New doors are on the list, both for security and insulation.

My garage windows are Lexan. Lexan is opaque to UV, very impact-resistant (they should stop handgun bullets, which is much better than the walls would do), and while Lexan is not as optically-clear as glass, that's not a bad thing for ground-floor windows. In fact, I'll probably go over them with some steel-wool or sandpaper in the spring to make them a little less transparent.

What Bear said...that shattergard is the stuff. I read an article a while back about the army applying it to their combat vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan (after that Rumsfield-armor debacle). Seems it stopped (some) bullets, shrapnel, small explosions...

not the same article but:

The article said that the military uses multiples layers for their armored vehicles.

Rolling shutters on the first floor windows, bars for the basement windows.

I've thought about roll-down metal shutters, but they might attract attention and so be counter-productive.
I think what we'll do here at the Hobbit House is wait until we replace the windows next year, and then
get the security film. We might even be able to have the film put on as part of a new window package.
I'll have to ask when the time comes.

A good firewall, perhaps. Or, install Linux and configure it wisely.

I have to argue with this a bit, in its original context.  About half the people who live here are "snow birds" and only live here in the summer.  They all cover the windows in winter, and almost all cabins get broken into.  Usually kids looking for pot.  I never cover a window.  My cabin has only been broken into once, and the guy who did it knew where the key was.  So I think that obvious window covering is just a "steal me" sign.  It will get you a lot more attention, and increase breakins and amount stolen.

So, plywood over the windows oughta be about as effective as a 'no gun zone' sign?

You should check out the 'Patriots' book by Mr Rawles. It describes how to mount heavy duty steel shutters with a sort of wood veneer (if I remember correctly).  I think these shutters combined with the 3M shattergaurd would be hard to beat.
