Mine's pretty small, too...but it looks big on me, I'm only 5'5" tall.

Wahhaa!    I'd better behave or I'll get busted for poor humor by Mac or Debra will ban me from the PGP threads.

But, since all of the PGP keys posted here are not RSA keys, but probably Deffie-Helman keys, I do not know the corresponding keys sizes to match the recommendations by RSA Labs. In general, the larger the key size the harder it is to factor. ;)

About the same.  Neither is inherently more secure than the other.   I use 1024 for everyday crypto and 4096 with an expiration date for stuff I don't want read before next Thursday.

You can make your public keys accessible to all of us HushMail users by heading to their key entering web-page.
Here's instructions:
https://www.hushmail.com/help.php?PHPSESSID...54c3&subloc=pgp
The PGP user must upload his/her public key to the Hush Key Server Network. Note: It is NOT necessary for the PGP user to upload a private key.

   1.
   2. The PGP user must export his/her public key in text format.
   3. The PGP user should go to www.hushtools.com.
   4. The PGP user should click on "Upload a public key".
   5. The PGP user should paste their text public key in the text box indicated.
   6. The PGP user must select a User ID for their public key. This should be the email address to which the Hushmail user will send mail.
   7. In most cases, no activation code will be required. Ignore that field.
   8. The PGP user should click "Upload Certificate".
   9. The PGP user will shortly receive an email confirming upload of the public key. The instruction in that email should be followed.
The key will then be activated, and any email sent to the chosen User ID (email address) by a Hushmail user will automatically be encrypted.

Here's mine though:

But, since all of the PGP keys posted here are not RSA keys, but probably Deffie-Helman keys, I do not know the corresponding keys sizes to match the recommendations by RSA Labs. In general, the larger the key size the harder it is to factor. ;)
Really?

Then I must be missing something. One of the big deals in the early days of PGP was the patent infringement issue with RSA. Of course, I'm no expert -- just read a few books. Was a Diffie-Helman algorithm added later?

As a GnuPG user, I'd be concerned if D-H were the default for PGP, because I don't recall seeing any support in GnuPG for it. I've got RSA, DSA, and ElGamal.

Not that I'm using crypto e-mail right now, but thinking ahead ... nobody wants an interoperability nightmare. And there already is, to some extent, depending upon which versions of PGP a person is using. (Fortunately, GnuPG provides option settings to force compatible operations to various versions of PGP.)

The newer versions of PGP are based on rfc2440 - the OpenPGP Message Format. While they may not include all of the specifications in the document in their program, the do include most of it.

The RSA patent has been in the public domain now since 2000. See http://www.rsasecurity.com/company/news/re....asp?doc_id=261 for details.

The two main key types used in the newer versions of PGP are the old RSA and the newer Elgamal or Diffie-Hellman keys. When I tested the newest version of PGP it defaulted to the Elgamal or Diffie-Hellman keys when you first ran the program and it automatically created an initial set of keys for you. It also provided for creating a legacy RSA key of 2,048 bits or less in the old format, and larger RSA keys of 4,096 bits or less in the new format.

The symmetric algorithms mentioned in this document are the old IDEA algorithm used by the original version of PGP, and Tripple DES, CAST5, Blowfish, and SAFER-SK128. The newest versions probably include the AES algorithm too.

The above document is interesting reading if you want to know the formats used, but it has not been updated since 1998 as far as I know.

Well, it's probably time for me to update my GnuPG, and see if it supports Diffie-Hellman.

This just further highlights my interoperability concerns.

Also, FYI, GnuPG doesn't support IDEA, since it's a patented algorithm, and so its use might be illegal in some countries. (I don't know the gory details of that issue.)

And, more FYI for interested parties, the default for GnuPG is a DSA "master signing key", with an ElGamal subkey. I'll have to go back and reread the docs for the reasoning behind that.
