Reason Online has published a whole flurry of homeschooling articles, of which this is the first.  Y'all might find it interesting.

Thanks John, I hadn't realized there were so many.  I read Homeschooling Alone...and got a bit of a chuckle.  They misspelled it, 'homescholing' on the website.

So, depending upon whose figures we use, between 1 and 2 million children were being homeschooled in 2003.  At $5,000.00 per student in state equalization funds (and I know that it is more in some states) that represents between 10 and 20 billion dollars that local school districts are not getting or an average of 100 to 200 million dollars per state.

Why haven't my taxes gone down?  <_<

Ahhh, taxes...

That's an ongoing conversation the Darling Boyfriend and I have.  His view is that some taxes are good...he wants good roads and police officers to stop bad guys, etc.  He likes the basic structure of our society and points out that taxes pay for the infrastructure.

I always point out that 'yes' I like good roads as opposed to ones full of potholes and some of the basic infrastructure as well...but just as I refuse to give money to bums on the street (I don't trust them to spend the money the way I would spend it) I don't trust the government to spend the taxes they receive appropriately either.

How much of our price per gallon of fuel is made up of taxes?  And if so much money is going towards taxes for roads, why are ours so crappy?

I pay taxes for the schools here to abuse kids (and yes, they damn well abuse them in this town), it doesn't educate them, and I reap none of the benefits of their so-called education.

I'm not so much against taxes as I am distrustful of how others are spending my hard-earned (or easily earned, it's really irrelevant, it's simply MINE) money.

National average, about 54%.  With gas currently at $2.25/gallon, that would make tax-free gas $1.04/gallon.  And are we really getting what we are paying for?  Not hardly!

Damn...well, let's see, gas here is around $2.20 per gallon, so that means $1.23 per gallon in taxes.

Let's say the average tank holds ten gallons and can last an average citizen for one week (mine never does).

Say we take the population of the town of Belton, population 34,000 and assign 1/2 of the population cars with the above numbers

1.23 x 10 = $12.30 per tank per week
$12.30 x 17,000 = $209,100 per week in taxes
or $10,873,200 per year in tax income JUST ON FUEL just in one mid-size town.

Dear God...what I could do with nearly $11 million dollars a year!

Yeah,  that and that two of the links pointed to the same article.
