Why would anyone want to act like that, especially in a no win situation?

Not all cops are vicious, but they certainly can be... and they routinely get away with it.  And you almost never know which is which until it is too late. Better to avoid all of them in most places, I think - and be polite to those you can't avoid.

I'm polite to everyone, just not willing to be subservient to anyone. I give lip service to the "speed limit" and have never been pulled over. Works for me.

But here's the joke in Newcastle. I have regularly traveled a road between the highway bypass and Main street, going past the high school. I carefully maintained a 30 MPH speed for nearly ten years (the limit on both cross streets). Then one day last summer I happened to notice a single, rather obscure sign that said the "speed limit" was 20 MPH.  Oh gosh... never knew that before. And, evidently, nobody else gave a damn, including the cops I've seen now and then on that road. Still trying to remember the 20MPH limit when I use that road, but usually don't think of it.

So, it depends a lot on where you are too.

Over here, the "school zone" speed limit is in effect only on days that actually have school (No Sat or Sun. No Summer. No holidays. etc). AND.......on days that there IS school, only during school hours. Usually 7am-6pm.

None of that indicated here, just a plain old speed limit sign that isn't too obvious. I rarely see anyone walking on that road, and always slow down when I do...  Of course that's all that's really necessary. People, including "kids," could be there any time of the day or night, actually. The presence of the school doesn't change anything.

Better not to be "pulled over" at all. Seems to me that this is one fight nobody really wins, especially if they resist or get nasty.

Only had one "ticket" since 1963 when I got my first car. Bogus "speeding" ticket on a totally empty desert road. Well, empty except for the CHP hiding behind a billboard. I was polite. End of story.

I was riding with someone once, however, and he was pulled over. We were both carrying openly at the time, and we wound up talking guns for 15 minutes with the trooper. Very friendly, and no ticket. Just a smiling warning to my lead foot companion.
