Question about searching this forum
« on: June 18, 2016, 08:39:38 pm »

Several times I have wished to search the forum for the posts of people who have left. Since they are no longer a member, they are not listed in the member section to look at their posts. Now their posts are still there, unless of course they erased them in a flounce off or something but is there any way to search out posts by member name, after they are gone? Just wondering.

No idea. I wish you luck though. I have always found the search feature here to be seriously lacking. It kinda sucks. :skeptical:

I have always found the search feature at TMM to be far less than good. Don't know why and have no idea how to fix it. :(

For me, the built-in search function, accessible from the "SEARCH" link on the bar near the top of each page, doesn't work very well, and is slow. There are two other choices, on the home page: https://secure.thementalmilitia.com/

1) ixquick site search
2) Google site search

I have very little experience with ixquick. It was added for people who don't like Google.

Google site search works well for me. And it's nearly instantaneous.

Tahn L. is correct that the posts of members who delete their accounts on the way out are still there, unless they have "flounced off". Neither Mr. Bill nor Clip Johnson removed their posts when they deleted their accounts, but it sure is inconvenient to be without a listing of all of their posts, as provided by their now-deleted profile pages.

It is possible to restore a deleted account, using the account information from database backups, and some MySQL wizardry, but I won't do it unless requested by a member wishing to rejoin the forums.

I have not tried ixquick to search at TMM... not sure how to do it, but will look. ixquick has been my default search engine for the general web for a good many years now. I've found it more than adequate. Would be wonderful if it worked to find things at TMM. :)

[Edit: No, I don't see ixquick anywhere on the home page... How would I find them, Bill?

It's on the home page of the site, not the home page of the forums: https://secure.thementalmilitia.com/

There are two text boxes with buttons to their right. One of the buttons is labelled "ixquick site search", the other "Google site search". Enter your search string in the box, and press return/enter or click on the button.

Oh... any reason why they can't be on the home page of the forum? I'll likely never remember to look elsewhere...  I've developed other ways to search for things using admin tools. :) But they are not terribly much better than the regular site search.
