Snowstorms - 2016
« on: January 02, 2016, 11:39:18 am »

Night time wind last 3 days was enough to shake the siding and panels on outbuildings.  No fresh powder except what set down on the night of the 31st.  Weather's warmed up.  Almost broke out of the sub freezing temps this morning.  May well hit 32 F today!!!!!

Wow, we had a 42 F today!!!  All the ice/snow on the house melted.  Awesome!  Now we get ice and slush.  Not so awesome.

15F high today, near zero tonight.
25F high tomorrow, low in the teens.
high 30s & low 40s highs the rest of the week, lows mostly below freezing

A little taste of normal January weather around here, then back to El Niño.

25 degrees out now, going for a high of 45. Down to 22 tonight, if it makes that. The forecast for last night said 19, but the low was 23. Not complaining... :) Forecast indicates some snow potential later in the week. Not going to hold my breath. Looks like 2016 will be a dry year here.

I know  it's 2017 already but I'll just comment for the snowfall in Iowa for 2016....  uh...  snow?  I think we got maybe an inch of snow this winter so far.  It's been a very weird winter.  Freezing, then thawing, freezing, then raining, freezing, then mid-friggin-50s.  This coming weekend we are supposed to reach 60.  In February.  I'm not complaining but I imagine this can't be good for trees if they start flowing sap and then we get a hard freeze again.

The mid February thaw happens almost everywhere, almost every year. When it is prolonged, the trees will respond, of course. Even in the So. Calif. desert, we had the same problem and the fruit trees bloomed too early all too often. So, little or no fruit that year. But it doesn't damage the trees, and so they will fruit another time when the conditions are right.

We have had a lot of snow this year here in Wyoming, even the NE "banana belt." Right now, the last of the snowdrifts are melting and we have a massive MUD problem. More mild weather coming the next week, then the hope of a little more snow. But we don't expect the last hard freeze to come much before the end of April. So there's plenty of winter left. :)

Bummer.  I was hoping to hang up my winter coat early this year!  I'll be enjoying this warm weekend though.

My winter coat hangs on the back door all year long. It can snow here any month but July, and nights are cold most of the year. I don't usually wear that coat outside of the core winter months, but it is always good to have it there instead of needing to dig it out of the downstairs closet. :)

All the old snow had melted by sundown yesterday. It didn't get below freezing much last night, but we got about 1 1/2 inch of new snow by morning. It has snowed very lightly much of the day, but no new accumulation. Temp topped out at 35 this afternoon, and supposed to have a 30% chance of more tonight, but I'd be surprised. Low of 17 expected tonight, so what wet snow we have will freeze. Oh well... we do need the moisture. :)

Bracing for "Winter Storm Stella". Why these storms need to be named is beyond me. I haven't been to the store (you know me, I'm already prepared), but I can just imagine what the shelves look like.

My area seems to be expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 18" (give or take a few), and gusts up to 50mph. Nothing new for upstate NY. Happens every year, yet people still freak out about it. Morons.......... :headscratch:

My biggest inconvenience will be not being able to work, which sucks. I'm overbooked and running behind lately. It's a good problem to have, but it is a problem nonetheless.
