Deer Hunting
« on: October 26, 2015, 06:36:53 am »

Well, after 7 years of wandering through the woods and freezing to death in a deer blind I finally bagged my first deer.  I now appreciated the term, "buck fever".  This 4-pt buck wandered into my area and I carefully brought my muzzle loader to my shoulder.  My heart was thundering in my chest and my whole body tensed and I squeezed the trigger.  Nothing.  Thankfully, I had forgotten to cock the hammer back.  Otherwise the shot would have gone who knows where.  Took a few deep breaths, gave my deer call a soft 'grunt' to keep him in my area and put the scope back over his heart.  Ker-blamo-booey!

I texted my buddy with shaking fingers and was convinced that I must have missed him.  He told me to wait a few minutes then go look for a blood trail.  Sure enough, there were some dull red spots - lung shot.  Followed the trail for about 20 yards and there he was: small rack but a nice big body.  We're guessing a 2-yr old buck so the meat should be fairly tender.  Got him field dressed, hauled out and hung.  Temps were in the low 50s so we decided to process him that afternoon.  Got him deboned and will take the chunks of meat (save the backstrap and tenderloins) to the locker to turn it into venison sticks.

Hoo boy... what a day.

First pic is me out in the field with him.  Frothy blood on the side shows the exit wound - both lungs shot through.

Congratulations dude...first one is always the best.   I have always hung my deer for a few weeks before processing to let them age a bit.  Seems to mellow the flavor imho but your mileage may vary.

By the way...exactly what gun makes that Ker-blamo-booey sound.  I have fire many weapons in my life and can not say I have ever heard that sound...lol.

Took him with my inline CVA 50cal muzzle loader.  My heart was thundering and I had tunnel vision.  I didn't even feel the recoil as the adrenaline took it all on.  Fortunately I looked up after the shot so I could see which way he ran.

Come December for shotgun season we'll let the deer hang for a few days in the much cooler temps.  Get more space cleared away in the barn so we can do just that...

Congrats knobster! :wav:

Let's designate this thread to all of our hunting triumphs. I will post pics of mine here if/when I get one or more of my own. It is bow season here now, but although I have a bow and the skills to use it, I don't usually bow-hunt. Gun season opens on the 11/21. Hopefully I will get one on opening weekend. I usually do.

So far for my family, my brother bagged a doe, and an uncle got a VERY NICE 8pt. It tipped the scales at 225lbs....DRESSED!!!!! Big deer! :thrshocker: I have a pic of it on my phone. If I get a chance, I will upload it.

Ah.  We have an old retired fridge in the garage that is used for hanging meat.

Wow!  Impressive rack.  Luckily my lil' 4-pointer didn't require a skid loader to move him!  My buddy asked if I wanted to keep the skull but I will wait until a trophy wanders into my path.

I'm really thinking about picking up a bow for next year...

I have at least 10 deer in the yard everyday. Yesterday it was a 12pt (6x6 on WY scale) munching the bushes, almost 2 in of snow cover. Need to invest n a crossbow
