Power cost last month:  $111.93.
Previous month (May):   $51.61

---
Splurging a bit - put $100 on power:

Remaining credit:  $64.13
Enough credit for 13 days.
Cost this month:  $10.51
Cost yesterday:    $5.21

Reason:  Monsoon & 100oF temps.  Checked central A/C filter - it's clean.  Current temp inside 82o.

The trains run on time here!

At 6:45 AM it is now up to 64 degrees outside, from a low of 54. Just closed all the windows about an hour ago when the sun came up. Still 65 degrees inside. Forecast high is 81, but we never got there yesterday, and there's a 20% chance of MORE DAMNED RAIN!!! - and various degrees of potential for even MORE over the next six or seven days. AGGGGHHH  I never, ever thought I'd complain about rain, but this is getting insane. It's actually the hail I can't cope with, but still...

Up here in the Finger Lakes, it was COLD this morning. I left the house at 6am, and the temperature gauge on the dash of my truck read 44 degrees. BRRRR :psm:. When I left the job site at 8:30am, it was already up to 69 degrees though. Supposed to be a decent weekend. 80 degrees or so.

It's a crystal blue day here in southern Vermont. Was 50F when I went out for my walk at 7am, after an overnight low of 45F. Expected to cross 70F around noon and get a few degrees warmer than that later on. Perfect. Expecting showers and low seventies tomorrow, then highs in the eighties for the rest of the imagined 10-day forecast.

I just recently read an article on weather.com (last week maybe?) where some brigadier general "Cheney" (related to Darth maybe?) was declaring "climate change a national security issue."  WOW... the weather broke into the government and stole national secrets and made off with bio weapons and nukes or maybe the weather declared a jihad against red white and bleu cheese?  I mean WTF?  These idiots and their sycophants are now going to go to war with the fucking weather?!  Seriously?

Some rather wild weather swings here this year.

Today
A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. Breezy, with a southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming southwest 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Tonight
Mostly clear, with a low around 55. Breezy, with a southwest wind 13 to 21 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.
Tuesday
Sunny, with a high near 72. Breezy, with a west wind 11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
Tuesday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 49. Northwest wind 12 to 17 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph.

********

Friday afternoon we had a nasty storm come through... about 20 minutes of 1 1/2 to 2 inch hail. Garden completely destroyed, all the bushes and trees damaged. No fruit this year, and maybe none next year. Lost too many mature branches. Very discouraging.

I may replant the spinach (third time) and some turnips, but the beans, squash and tomatoes are history. No time for them to recover and produce anything before first killing frost the middle of September - or sooner. Who knows?

Had killing frosts July 28 and July 29...which is why I don't bother with frost-tender annuals!

Where in the world do you live? Barrow, Alaska? The northern tip of Iceland? The north pole? :)

The hail was bad enough for me. I'm thinking of trying something like a big camo net over the garden. Might deflect some of the hail anyway. Not sure if anything can be done for the gooseberries and currant bushes. They were really mangled this last time.

Sort about the destruction the hail brought,  Mama...

We're in the mid- 90's with high humidity. Some of my plants - which I purchased because they were listed as heat/drought tolerant, have not done so well...

Some of my plants - which I purchased because they were listed as heat/drought tolerant, have not done so well...

Even heat tolerant plants need to be put into the ground long before the heat comes, and watered carefully. You might look into using something called "SuperThrive," a root stimulant. http://www.amazon.com/Superthrive-Vitamin-Solution-fl-oz/dp/B000OM82J0/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1438369575&sr=1-1&keywords=SuperThrive

Should be available in any home improvement store or nursery.

A big, healthy root system in place before the heat hits is also essential. Might even help revive some of the things that are struggling now. Also, consider providing some temporary shade for things that don't look good now. An A frame of pallets will hold some shade sloth nicely.  I couldn't have gardened in the desert without it.
