I started watching it.  I'm two or three episodes in and I can't keep track of the characters.  I must be getting old.  Who is this guy again?  Where are there?  Oh wait.. wasn't he dead last time?

Maybe not being to watch in single sittings is interrupting my brain.  Maybe just old.

No, there are a TON of characters and locales.

Video game and D&D geeks will outshine most everyone else at keeping up here.  The amount of characters is somewhat higher than average, bordering on staggering.  Thankfully, the show's well developed garbage cleanup functions (programming joke) does a great job of killing the majority of characters.  Many of the ones you see there, even the really awesome honorable ones, will probably die, if they haven't yet.  The show / story keeps itself manageable by slapping RIP next to just about anyone who can possibly RIP.  And some sonzabitches really do have it coming and don't get it... at all.  Pity.

If you are familiar with TV Tropes or just story tropes or videogame tropes, know for sure that plot armor is something that is sparingly if at all available in Game of Thrones.  Tyrion, Daenerys and perhaps Jon Snow.  Maybe even a few others, but I won't spoil it for you.  Just know that even if they don't die, horrible things are at times done to them.  This show approaches reality.  Minus the dragons.  But we weren't there so we don't know if maybe dragons did roast dudes in their shells in ancient times.

I will say this.  Don't get attached to ANYONE that is honorable, good, badass, or awesome.  Tyrion is probably the only scumbag you can fall in love with, attitude wise at least.  He's sarcastic, he's witty and most of all, he's almost always right.  Which, as we all know, is what you want to be in real life.  May not be lovable, may not be "nice" but being right, in a world where physics and reality exist, will mean you won't die walking off cliffs hoping for things that don't exist to save you... Pegasi and Gandalf's eagles do NOT exist in their universe, even if dragons do.  And unless you're a hot albino chick, the dragons won't do anything other than roast you at the hot albino chick's command.

Was reading a recap of the latest episode (battle of Castle Black) and found these in the comments section:

Why doesn't George R. R. Martin use Twitter?
Because he killed all 140 characters.

I have not read through this thread as we just finished season 3 and cannot see the fourth season until it's release in early 2015. I was really, REALLY, shook-up by Season 3, Episode 9.

***SPOILER***
I cannot believe that Robb, his wife and his mothers were killed off! Ugh, and the way the event went down.... It really got to me. Maybe because his wife was stabbed in the belly first?... I dunno... That scene, the one where Joffery kills Ros, and the first season of killing the bastard children of the king... Just awful... oh, and the giving of the newborn males to the ice-freaks!
***SPOILER***

Where's that "bummed out" smiley?!

Season 3, Episode 9.

Currently reading first book.  It's reminding me why I don't like fantasy ... or Renaissance Faires ... even if they're rated R.  The porno scenes are kinda behind the curtains so far in the book - they're definitely expanded upon in the TV show.  Not that it's a plus, but if killing off characters in a fantasy book gets you $$$ then wait 'til my book comes out - Frodo won't make it past the first chapter = $$$!

So far:  Show(s) >> Book(s)

The book reads like a writer's attempt to recap the episodes ... so I guess that's a good thing (show) and a bad thing (author).  I like his SF/horror stuff, though (Sandkings etc.).

New season in April - unfortunate thing is I forget who's doing what to whom from season to season.  I'm sure there's Dragons and nekkid chicks though.

I've stopped watching on-line video for two weeks now. Might go to videoholics anonymous meetings if there were such a thing. But I think I'll pay HBO $16/month for 3 months of online Game of Thrones, now that they're going to make that possible without a cable subscription. I torrented the past two seasons, but I'm happy to pay them now that they're making it possible for less than an arm an a leg.

It appears only to be for Apple products though.  I can't imagine them NOT doing this for other platforms too.  It would be too dumb not to.

Did some searching on that Apple/HBO thing (wouldn't call it a scam, though):

Essentially, Apple paid HBO and Time Warner whatever amount of money to try to trick you into buying an Apple TV. And, knowing that Apple TV is already not the finest product in the world, they cut the price on it too. Even those of us who own Macs, but not Apple’s other knick-knacks, are locked out of HBO Now. It’s just for Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone. Seriously? Are you going to watch Game of Thrones on your iPhone.

As the dust settles from this week's big Apple reveal, one question lingers: Who gains more from exclusive distribution of new streaming service HBO NOW? I don't know what the device maker paid for the privilege, but big benefits belong to it. I wonder: What were HBO executives thinking by tying the service's early destiny to a single platform during telecast of the popular Game of Thrones series?

Particularly for cord-cutters who don't have Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, or iPod and want GoT Season 5 the choice is simple: Buy ATV for 69 bucks or spend more on another device capable of running HBO's iOS app—or steal! Three days ago my colleague Alan Buckingham, who owns no fruit-logo products and cord-cuts, wrote that he might get the streaming box. Today I asked if he really plans to buy Apple TV. "I haven't yet, but I likely will", he says.

Yes. I like watching video and reading on my iPhone. In bed at night, lying on my side.

Why HBO gave Apple an exclusive, though, I have no clue.

I know my choice.  They could have made $15 / mo. from me.  Now they'll get nothing.  Assholes.
