I am being very, very skeptical about this, mainly because I am wondering if (assuming that nuclear DNA was successfully extracted from the alleged remains) what DNA that was compared to, to reach the alleged conclusion.  Any theories?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Forensic technicians have identified another set of human remains found in the rubble of the World Trade Center, nearly a decade after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The office of New York City’s medical examiner announced Tuesday that it had successfully matched a set of remains to 40-year-old Ernest James, who had been assumed dead in the Twin Towers’ collapse.

And they are spending the money to do this because....

What possible difference could it make? Not saying it can't, just that I don't see anything.

If blood relatives of missing people donated a DNA sample, then a partial match
would be a good indicator.

Children of a missing person would carry half of the missing person's alleles (sp?).
Likewise, the missing person would carry half of their parents alleles.

A sibling would have the same mitochondrial DNA. So would the children if the
missing person is their mother.

If DNA shows that they are related, and everyone else is accounted for, then it's
pretty clear who the person is.

MamaLiberty,

In the big scheme of things, it probably matters very little. It does provide
closure to someone, and for everyone else involved, it's an opportunity to
show respect for the dead.

That folks show little respect for the living in New York is another issue...
I don't think anyone has ever claimed that human beings are rational and
consistent.

Yes indeed... but at what cost and how many of the living are being disrespected to provide this? There are many other ways to honor the dead. sigh
