<snip>Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill seem prepared to reprise their Star Wars roles (Han Solo, Leia Skywalker/Solo and Luke Skywalker, respectively); meaning, the next major casting announcements should reveal who are portraying the sons and daughters of the Skywalker and Solo clan in the film.
 
Last month, Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling were rumored to be in consideration to play such characters as Luke’s son (in Gosling’s case); for now, it’s fair to say that neither actor is likely to sign on for the project in the future. Elsewhere, there has been talk of Chloë Grace Moretz portraying Han and Leia’s daughter in Episode VII, as started by rumors about the version that Matthew Vaughn pitched (when he was in consideration to direct). Moretz has since claimed that she’s open to joining the iconic sci-fi/fantasy franchise, but denied having any insider knowledge on the situation.

The newest Episode VII casting rumor comes from Latino Review, which is the same site that provided the Efron/Gosling rumor and recent (unconfirmed) claims about how the deceased Emperor Palpatine and Obi-Wan Kenobi might fit into the film’s narrative. LR is reporting that actress Rachel Hurd-Wood has both read and auditioned for the role of Han and Leia’s daughter – a character named Jaina in the Star Wars ‘Expanded Universe’ (read: supplementary literature, comic books, video games, etc.). Meanwhile, the site also claims that Alex Pettyfer will be meeting with the filmmakers behind Episode VII soon, as he may be in the running to play Luke’s son (named Ben in the Star Wars EU).

There were initially rumors – shortly after Disney bought Lucasilm and confirmed Episode VII is happening – that suggested the film’s story will not be based on any EU sources. While more recent rumors haven’t totally contradicted the claim, there does seem to be a chance that the script by Michael Arndt (Oblivion) could takes its cues from the “Legacy of the Force” storyline (a series of nine books) – albeit, with significant changes, in terms of which Solo/Skywalker children are corrupted by the Dark Side and must fight to save their relative/sibling’s soul. Not to mention, what the major new threat is that our heroes must face, some three decades after the fall of the Galactic Empire. </snip>

Well, we planned to hold off showing episode IV until the kiddos were six'ish, give or take. But.... A couple of weekends ago we showed it to them. They showed no signs of fear and didn't have any subsequent bad dreams. In fact, the next day DD kept telling me how "awesome it was." We didn't tell them that Luke and Leia are brother/sister as they will find out through the later movies - which we will hold off on (for now).

Why would the kiddies have bad dreams from seeing the original star wars?  I saw it young and didn't hurt my feelings any.

Coincidentally, in the original canon, anyone notice just how much The Force resembles what the westerners call God (Abraham's God, to be specific.)

The Force controls your actions when needed, but also listens to you and lets you control it at times.  Sort of like the "Struggling with the Lord" line of prayer lessons available these days.

Just saying.  Most people compare The Force to Chi/Ki/Qi/Prana/Vrill or some other universal "force" though by the time the new starwars movies came out, one has to pretty much assume its been canonized that The Force is conscious, not dissimilarly to The Dust, from that oh so maligned set of books by Philip Pullman.  (I always understood the Dust to be God, and the one everyone assumes to be God to be more of an usurper taking the place and claiming the role for itself.)  But I digress.  I draw my own inferences and conclusions.  As I said in a different thread, I doubt very much the Creator who Loves Us is "unknowable."    Unknowable is the word mystics used to keep the peasants in line.  All that exists can be known, and a loving father wants his sons to know him, and join him.

Anyways, anyone else make those observations while watching and reading the canonical Starwars tales and movies?

You never know what is going to freak kids out.  When my son was small, like 4 or so, I was up late one night watching one of the howling movies.  In one scene some guy turned into a werewolf and proceeded to tear some other guy apart.  Suddenly a voice from the floor beside my chair asked why the guy and turned into a monster and why he was eating the other dude.  My son had come out and sat down on the floor without a peep.  That did not phase him in the slightest.

What did?  In Rodger Rabbit when the bad guy (Christopher Lloyd) loses his fake eyes and turns around with his cartoon eyes and high squeaky voice...off the floor like a shot, wracking sobs with nightmares to follow.

Guinness's role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars trilogy, beginning in 1977, brought him worldwide recognition by a new generation, as well as Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. In letters to his friends, Guinness described the film as "fairy tale rubbish," but the film's sense of moral good – and the studio's doubling of his initial salary offer – appealed to him, and he signed on.[18] He was one of the few cast members who believed that the film would be a box office hit; he negotiated a deal for 2% of the gross royalties paid to the director, George Lucas, who received one fifth of the box office takings. In the DVD commentary of the original Star Wars, director George Lucas says that Guinness was not happy with the script re-write in which Obi-Wan is killed. However, Guinness said in a 1999 interview that it was actually his idea to kill off Obi-Wan, persuading Lucas that it would make him a stronger character, and that Lucas agreed to the idea. When I was little, I saw a Muppet Show episode that gave me trouble sleeping.  The Muppet News guy was reporting that people's furniture had been coming alive and eating people.  Meanwhile, eyes popped out of his desk and a mouth full of sharp teeth, etc.

The original Planet of the Apes movie scared me too.

Personally it has always been books and not movies that did me in.  Probably number one being Pet cemetery by Mr. King.

I'm surprised Moonbeam didn't list the original Dark Forces (Jedi Knight prequel) and Jedi Knight, the games.

Probably some of the more creative FPS shooters out there, and Dark Forces ran off the Doom Engine, while JK ran off a more advanced version of the quake engine with quake 2 elements thrown in for fun.  Add in all the extra force and star wars elements, and it became quite a fun fest.  (Other than the boss fight with the twins.)

The kiddos have now seen all but Episdoe III as we feel they are not quite ready for the heaviness of it. They also watch The Clone Wars and the newer series Rebels.

After they play the original Jedi Knight (1), they'll be very upset that they have to use ladders and that humans are crippled with such crappy agility and jumping skills off screen.
