or Massively multiplayer online role-playing game

KPL:
I took on the monumental, multi-year task, of learning programming languages and
building my own MMORPG. Why? because I'm tired of playing RPGs that have
rulers, and I figure that I can test my social/political theories out in cyberspace to
prove their viability...

I'd say multi year is central... C, unix, ethernet, ... have you started?

Any ideas, news, rumors?

Still working on designs and such...

My Music guy is having personal problems due to deaths in his family and his gf left him...

My Younger Brother is going to help out when the actual programming starts in 2 years.

I'm handling the designs and attributes as well as the story.

Multi-year is definitely the important part of that statement. Unless I get more help, it will probably take 10 years. I'm an active member of the World Forge forums, though I mostly Lurk...

My Older Brother is a programmer and Whitehat... He makes Websites for a living, but makes cell phone apps on the side for fun. He has offered his help as an adviser when the time comes to start programming. He made several educational games when we were kids, and still holds an interest in making games...

I Have drawn up a map for the game...

I started in the olden time (D&D)... It was always interesting to mix and
morph segments into something gnu.

I find it fun in general to create a new world and all it's wonders.

Though if you're interested, compare that map to a group of islands called the "Central Visayas". The town of Asturias on my map really exists on those islands.

The placement of topographical features will be about the same... except where changes in landmasses are obvious.

And all that must reside in data structure(s), etc.
so the programs can work off it.

Ah, D&D.  My gaming group has been taking a break from our D&D 4th edition game lately to play something else (Star Wars Saga Edition).

I've never been much for the Fantasy genre, but I do have fun playing D&D.  One of my favorite moments was when I had our fighter Fastball Special my paladin into a horde of opponents.  The entire group had a huge "WTF!?!?!?!" moment right up until I pointed out that the DM was swearing it was a bad idea.  That convinced the rest of the group that it just had to be done.

So the fighter succeeded at the roll to throw me and it went a little something like this:

DM: "OK, you're flying through the air.  Now what?"
Me:  "Does this count as charging?"
He begrudgingly admitted that it did, "But you'll be prone once you land."
Me: "That's OK.  I'll attack. ... Can I use my breath weapon right now?"
DM: "N-....Sure, if you can show me that it's not against the rules."
So, I looked at everything and said "It doesn't say I can't."
DM: "Crap.  OK, fine."
One Nat 20 later, I've bloodied half of our opponents and landed on one of them.
DM: "OK, now you're prone."
Me: "That's OK, so is the guy I landed on."
DM: "Yep. He grapples you."
Me: "He's a level one goblin with ten hit points pinned under a two hundred twenty pound Dragonborn.  I don't think he's grappling anything."
DM: "Good point.  Give me a second. ... ... You killed him when you landed on him.  You now have to scrape goblin guts off of your armor, but you're still prone."
Me: "That's OK, the druid's next in the initiative order."
DM: "So?"
Druid: "I cast chain lightning."
DM: "Crap."
No nat 20 here, but we're down to about half of our original opposing force and we still have four people to go.  The NPCs never got a turn.

Anyway, enough about D&D.  Back to the MMORPG discussion.

Hmmm....

Skip the Orcmaids...

Careful with the Dwarves, both genders are hairy and have beards...

...and if you feel like trying out a dragonbourne or centaur, I suggest eating a golden mushroom first.

So much for your regularly scheduled MMO thread.  :P  For the RPGers out there, especially the D&D players, I highly recommend the movie "The Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising".  And if you haven't seen "The Gamers", don't worry.  It's OK, but you're not really missing anything.

So er uh...........why not simply skip all the "real" programming and use a prebuilt open source engine.
