Bill would ban Tasers at schools

Requires fake data to get past opening page. Februrary 30th for a DOB works.

Quote
PALATKA -- A state senator said Thursday night he is proposing a bill to ban the use of Tasers at schools following recent cases in which the stun guns were deployed on students in Putnam and Miami-Dade counties.

Sen. Tony Hill, D-Jacksonville, led debate at a community meeting at Jenkins Middle School, where authorities said a school resource officer used a Taser on a 12-year-old girl in October because she refused to leave school after hours and resisted arrest.

Sounds like using a prod to get a pig out the door and up a ramp.

Quote
About 80 people attended, most of whom were black, who demanded to know why all four students tased in Putnam this year were African-Americans.

They and Hill, who represents parts of Putnam County, also said the weapons were too excessive in schools and asked why police can't rely on self-defense training to stop fights or take control of unruly students

"The question I want to raise tonight is how did we get here," said Hill, who noted that the Senate Judiciary Committee is drafting the bill to keep Tasers out of schools.

But really, what DA is going to prosecute a cop if he violates this law? <_<

Quote
Putnam schools Superintendent David Buckles and Sheriff Taylor Douglas defended the Taser as one of the safest weapons to stop school fights and control unruly children.

No surprise here.

Quote
Tom Smith, president and co-founder of Taser International, came from Arizona to attend the meeting.

Smith said the stun guns are safe. He said if there was ever a situation where police had to use force to subdue his 3-year-old and 5-year-old children, he would prefer them to use the Taser before pepper spray or the baton.

Who would even consider pepper spray, baton, OR a Taser on a 3 yo!   I think this Amnesty International report must have pushed Taser International over the edge. They're spinning and flailing right now, and looking awfully damned stupid!

Use of Taser force in Northeast Florida schools
PUTNAM COUNTY

Jan. 15: A 14-year-old E.H. Miller School student was Tasered four times after a teacher notified a school resource officer about a disturbance in the classroom. The girl refused to step outside when told and apparently tried to strike a deputy in the head. The student was charged with assaulting an officer and resisting arrest. Neither the student nor the officer was injured.

Oct. 7: A 16-year-old Palatka High School student was Tasered once after punching a school resource officer in the mouth. He was charged with two counts of battery on an officer and interference with school function. The student was uninjured but the officer received stitches.

Oct. 19: A 16-year-old Palatka High School student was Tasered once as a school resource officer tried to break up a fight between her and another student. The student was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest with violence. Neither the student nor officer was injured.

Oct. 21: A 12-year-old Jenkins Middle School student was Tasered three times after she struck an officer in the arm and shoulder. The student had been told to leave school property because it was after hours. The student was charged with resisting arrest with violence, battery on an officer and trespassing. Neither the officer nor the student was injured.

CLAY COUNTY

Aug. 21, 2002: An 18-year-old Orange Park student was Tasered once after attempting to run off while a school resource officer questioned him. The student was charged with resisting arrest without violence. Neither the student nor the officer was injured.

April 24, 2003: A 15-year-old Green Cove Springs Junior High School student was Tasered once after refusing to be handcuffed for a charge of marijuana possession. The student was charged with resisting arrest without violence. Neither the officer nor the student was injured.

May 28, 2003: In trying to break up a fight between two students, a school resource officer Tasered a 15-year-old Green Cove Springs Junior High School student once. The student was charged with resisting arrest without violence. Neither the officer nor the student was injured.

See! See how "safe" it is? See how many of these reports end "Neither the officer nor the student was injured." Nevermind that it may be "wrong", it's "safe".

They don't use self defense/hth training because tasering someone is soooo much easier. Most of the cops that I've talked to can't fight one on one let alone restrain someone. They don't really have the training, most times their restraining moves invole them and four of their JBT buddies piling on you. They took some training at the academy or wherever they learned their trade and they take a refresher a couple to three time a year.
If you give them a tool like a taser, then they are going to use it.

PS
It seems to me that getting hit with 50,000 volts is injury. Contrary to what other folks might think.
