Title: "Domain Registry of America"
Post by: Joel on July 24, 2005, 01:17:27 pm
Yesterday I got a "domain name expiration notice" from something calling itself Domain Registry of America, which wants me to send money.

I don't want to send them money.  I send money to NearlyFreeSpeech, which responds with a product.  I noticed that this "renewal" actually involves transfering the name to this bunch.

I smell a scam.  Can anybody lend me a clue?  I'll give it back full of gas.

John, not exactly a scam. That is, they are phishing but "legally" so. They are a legitimate domain name registrant, but they also use sleight-of-hand and deception to fool people into thinking they were your original domain name registrar or that you must register with them.

A few years ago I helped a friend maintain his web site. Unbeknownst to me, not knowing any better, he replied to these shysters because he was afraid of losing his domain name. He was stuck with these shysters for a year. And they are more expensive than other registrars too. At the end of the contract period, shaking them loose was not so difficult, but they refused to drop my friend's account until the last moment.

Everything they do is "legal," but they are nonetheless shady in their practices. Tell them to go fuck themselves and keep registering your domain name as you previously did.

Hear hear!!

These bastards are fscking low pieces of excrement ... making it look like an invoice to get your business.

I've got mail from them before, and this "tactic" frankly pisses me off.
