Title: Current weather conditions
Post by: Moonbeam on June 16, 2015, 05:10:00 pm
Well, our neck of the woods (western TN) can't quite compete with AZ, but it's still unbearable here IMHO (low 90's during the day; low 70's at night). I don't know how I survived South Florida! Ugh, I hate summer!

Gonna get a little toasty - TV says 87o at 0716.

and ...

---
Last month, much of the United States was wet. How wet? When climate scientists at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information averaged the observations of rain, snow, and other precipitation from across the country, they found out it the countrys wettest May since records began 121 years ago. In fact, it was the wettest month ever recorded!

Gotta love the exclamation point.  Imagine them writing a paper for a particle physics journal:

Abstract:  Dude, we measured the fine structure constant to, like, twenty significant digits!

Tropical Storm Bill

Came ashore north and east of me so I am on the "mild" side in this instance.

We are getting a light mist and winds around 12 to 20 mph but no real "storm" conditions.

Port O'Conner, Texas is the landfall as close as I can see from the less than optimal charts the weather service puts up online.

Highest winds so far are 50 to 60 mph. Rain will be the big factor as we have already had the wettest May on record here in Texas. See image below for rain probability chart.

Note small white dot in storm force winds charts. That is the Eye of TS Bill.

Yeah but you probably have much more humidity.  I've been in NC when it was 95o F and 90+% humidity. I'll take 110o F and our relatively low humidity here over that any day.  Although monsoon season just started so it does up the humidity but the rain cools things off a bit.

I thought I left the A/C on by accident when I came in today - it was 20o cooler inside - thermostat was at 91o.

Temperatures are just about perfect, but this is the wettest spring I can remember. It's rained harder at times before, but not so consistently, for so many days consecutively. It is still too wet to mow the weeds, and they've just about finished going to seed. Next year ought to be so much fun. :)

Detailed forecast:
Today
A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Light and variable wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the afternoon.
Tonight
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 55. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.
Thursday
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 9 to 14 mph in the morning.
Thursday Night
A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 58. Southeast wind 8 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.
Friday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. East wind 5 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
Friday Night
A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 56. North wind 5 to 8 mph.
Saturday
A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 75.
Saturday Night
A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53.

I"m north of ML, depending on road you take, 60 to 100 miles. :D

Lets say we had RAIN during day and night, with hail at least the entirety of last week .. hail only at night.

Yeah but you probably have much more humidity.

Oh, boy howdy! When I lived in Florida I swore one could sweat while taking a shower! As much as living there sucked (for me), the constant heavy dose of Vitamin D kept me relatively well. We spent a couple of weeks in Colorado one summer and walked around quite comfortable while the locals complained of the heat. It was a welcome break for us! I also spent some wintertime in Colorado and could handle being outdoors since it wasn't as wet as it gets in the east.

GOOCH - Did you fare well through T.S. Bill? We could have used some of that rain here in TN. We had gray skies, cloudy skies and some sunshine on and off throughout Friday. There was about 15-20 minute period total of light rain. Oh well. I'm glad I didn't have go outside to water the plants!

Still raining off and on in NE Wyoming. This is getting ridiculous! No more hail, so far. We had a tornado warning last night - the weather people have a recording that goes out by telephone. Funny thing was there wasn't a cloud in the sky when the call came! The storm went to the north of us, so DF probably got some of it, but we had just a light rain sometime during the night. Already near 70 degrees outside this morning, and it's 74 in here already because I couldn't dare leave the windows open last night. Rats. Once these logs heat up, it is not possible to cool it down again.

And yes, I'm eager to hear from Gooch.

Yeah well I'm fine Moonbeam. You folks won't get rid of me that easily.
The storm passed north and east of me and all we got was three days of cloudy skies with rain and drizzle when the rain slowed.
The highest winds were in the 30 mph range but to an open ocean sailboat sailor that's just enough to move the boat properly. FYI = 20 to 30 knots is called "a schooner breeze".

You Might just get some of that rain when it moves north and east. (see rain probability chart above)

Thanks for the concern.

I am still waiting for the ground to dry enough for me to go back to mowing lawns.
I was able to plant a shade tree for a customer even in the slow drizzle.

Otherwise I am still a salt encrusted (freshly rinsed) sailor pretending to be educated in the ways of the world.

Still toasty

Power usage:  Yesterday:             $4.28
                      This month so far:  $68.03
                      Last month:           $51.61

Community pool helps against using A/C.  Jump in, get out, walk back to house with damp shorts and it keeps you cool for a bit.  Haven't turned on A/C this afternoon and it's 92oF inside wearing damp shorts - cost today so far is $1.96 at 1808 HRS.

Power was intermittent for a bit - just high winds.  Knocked part of a roof tile off.  The downed Saguaro has been across a chain link fence for a month or so - down the street - not sure what caused it to fall.  Thought about asking owner if I could cut off an arm and plant it in front yard.

The monsoon packed quite the punch over the weekend with strong winds rushing through the Valley.

The force knocked down power lines leaving thousands without power for several hours Saturday night.

Been the wettest spring/early summer in recent memory for most of the folks here in Iowa.  I can count on one hand the number of sunny days this past month.  Mushrooms and mosquitos are abundant.  Peas are enjoying the cooler weather.  Tomatoes and green peppers are not.  I think I know the reason for all the rain: back in April I almost purchased a rain barrel.  I had more pressing needs for my FRNs so I decided to postpone on the barrel purchase.  Guess it was a good thing...

Power cost last month:  $111.93.
Previous month (May):   $51.61

Splurging a bit - put $100 on power:

Remaining credit:  $64.13
Enough credit for 13 days.
Cost this month:  $10.51
Cost yesterday:    $5.21

Reason:  Monsoon & 100oF temps.  Checked central A/C filter - it's clean.  Current temp inside 82o.

At 6:45 AM it is now up to 64 degrees outside, from a low of 54. Just closed all the windows about an hour ago when the sun came up. Still 65 degrees inside. Forecast high is 81, but we never got there yesterday, and there's a 20% chance of MORE DAMNED RAIN!!! - and various degrees of potential for even MORE over the next six or seven days. AGGGGHHH  I never, ever thought I'd complain about rain, but this is getting insane. It's actually the hail I can't cope with, but still...

Up here in the Finger Lakes, it was COLD this morning. I left the house at 6am, and the temperature gauge on the dash of my truck read 44 degrees. BRRRR :psm:. When I left the job site at 8:30am, it was already up to 69 degrees though. Supposed to be a decent weekend. 80 degrees or so.

It's a crystal blue day here in southern Vermont. Was 50F when I went out for my walk at 7am, after an overnight low of 45F. Expected to cross 70F around noon and get a few degrees warmer than that later on. Perfect. Expecting showers and low seventies tomorrow, then highs in the eighties for the rest of the imagined 10-day forecast.

Some rather wild weather swings here this year.

Today
A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. Breezy, with a southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming southwest 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Tonight
Mostly clear, with a low around 55. Breezy, with a southwest wind 13 to 21 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph.
Tuesday
Sunny, with a high near 72. Breezy, with a west wind 11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph.
Tuesday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 49. Northwest wind 12 to 17 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph.

********

Friday afternoon we had a nasty storm come through... about 20 minutes of 1 1/2 to 2 inch hail. Garden completely destroyed, all the bushes and trees damaged. No fruit this year, and maybe none next year. Lost too many mature branches. Very discouraging.

I may replant the spinach (third time) and some turnips, but the beans, squash and tomatoes are history. No time for them to recover and produce anything before first killing frost the middle of September - or sooner. Who knows?

Where in the world do you live? Barrow, Alaska? The northern tip of Iceland? The north pole? :)

The hail was bad enough for me. I'm thinking of trying something like a big camo net over the garden. Might deflect some of the hail anyway. Not sure if anything can be done for the gooseberries and currant bushes. They were really mangled this last time.

Some of my plants - which I purchased because they were listed as heat/drought tolerant, have not done so well...

Even heat tolerant plants need to be put into the ground long before the heat comes, and watered carefully. You might look into using something called "SuperThrive," a root stimulant. http://www.amazon.com/Superthrive-Vitamin-Solution-fl-oz/dp/B000OM82J0/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1438369575&sr=1-1&keywords=SuperThrive

Should be available in any home improvement store or nursery.

A big, healthy root system in place before the heat hits is also essential. Might even help revive some of the things that are struggling now. Also, consider providing some temporary shade for things that don't look good now. An A frame of pallets will hold some shade sloth nicely.  I couldn't have gardened in the desert without it.

More of the same tomorrow, mostly sunny and hot with the National Weather Service issuing another heat warning.   That heat warning will start at 11am and come to an end at 8pm.   Expect temperatures to range around 112 to 115 here in the valley.

I agree, in general I tell folks to subtract about 15 degrees.  So 95 here means 80 or so in the Midwest.  Had some friends in from IL and it was 95 out - 'It doesn't feel like like 95.'  'Yeah, but this isn't IL.'

From ML's above post:
__________
temp 92
Humidity    17%

__________

But right now here (8:45 p.m.):
__________
98F
Humidity: 29%

__________

However, we are in our 'monsoon' season - so it varies a lot.  It is usually dry - you don't sweat beads, it just evaporates, then you start getting headaches, get tired, disoriented ... then some Mexicans show up on your claim.

Here in Benninton, Vermont they're predicting 88F tomorrow, with 69% humidity. A far cry from 95F with 95% humidity that I remember from Augusts in Boston, but still mighty hot and humid.

Temp still bouncing all over the place. Went from 6 degrees above freezing the other morning, to the high 60s today, and back and forth the last week. Going for a high of 90 today, says the forecast. Was supposed to be that yesterday, but only made it to 81. I'll take it. LOL  20% chance of rain today, 30% tomorrow.  I don't expect any this time of year... but it could fool us, for sure.

It's been head-scratching gorgeous in Iowa this past week.  Feels like September weather.  Dropping into the upper 40s at night and barely breaking 80 during the day.  Next week we warm back up to mid-80s but by golly I'm loving this weather!  The green peppers and tomatoes... not so much.

I cannot believe how *cool* it's been around here in the month of... AUGUST! We had a few mornings that dipped down into the upper 50's, and even a few days where the highs were in the mid to upper 80's. Did I mention that we're in AUGUST?!? Just unbelievable! The other night I went to get the hummingbird feeder to clean and refill and was shocked how cool it was outside. I am wondering if my beloved hummingbirds are starting to migrate? Seems a bit early, but it would explain the increase in numbers. Begs the question: exactly how cold of a winter will we have?

Pool time will be gone in a month or so, then winter visitors will be here clogging up everything.  You just have to adjust for their grocery store visits, etc. until early April.

Power cost last month:  $143.78  A/C unit will be shut off hopefully in about a month - restart maybe May/June.

Probably last storm for awhile:

Tens of thousands of people in Phoenix remain without power after a severe thunderstorm tracked over the city on Monday night.

At one point on Monday night, over 70,000 electric customers were without power between Arizona Public Service Co. and Utilities Salt River Project, two of the electric companies in Phoenix.

As of early Wednesday morning, approximately 6,000 were still without power as crews continued to work on restoration efforts.

No storms, no rain, temps rarely above 75 during the day. Nights getting cool and the tomatoes have stopped setting. First frost could happen any time here.

My neighbor installed the new storm door on the back, so that should help keep some of the cold air out from now on.

Well, it's been fun folks - maybe a Mormon author fixed the Mayans' mistake.  ^_^
http://www.kpho.com/story/30122553/blood-moon-seen-as-sign-of-end-times-by-some-mormons
---
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -

A rare confluence of a lunar eclipse and a supermoon set to happen this weekend has prompted such widespread fear of an impending apocalypse that the Mormon Church was compelled to issue a statement cautioning the faithful to not get caught up in speculation about a major calamity.

Sunday night's "blood moon" and recent natural disasters and political unrest around the world have led to a rise in sales at emergency-preparedness retailers. Apocalyptic statements by a Mormon author have only heightened fears among a small number of Mormon followers about the looming end of time. The eclipse will give the moon a red tint and make it look larger than usual. It won't happen again for 18 years.

It's unclear how many Latter-day Saints buy the theory, but Mormon leaders were worried enough that they took the rare step this week of issuing a public statement cautioning the faithful not to get carried away with visions of the apocalypse.

We use terms like nice, pleasant, dreary, crappy, etc. to describe the weather/climate. My perception doesnt always align with prevailing sentiment. Is a 60 degree day with a few rain showers a nice day? What about clear and 10 degrees? Here in Alaska, people complain when it is 40 degrees in January as being too warm. In Phoenix, people start complaining when there are two cloudy days in a row.

I'd rather drive through rain than snow/sleet/ice/yuck any day.

I'd rather not drive in the rain either... :) But our snow isn't wet/sleet/ice. Mostly it is dry powder. If the temperature rises above freezing, it's so dry here that the snow evaporates as much as melts.

Without a good snow pack, however, our grasslands and forests will burn next summer. That's why we want all the snow we can get (within reason, of course.) :)

Laddie (my corgi) loves snow. He very much enjoys trotting along, dipping his face in it from time to time and coming up with a mouthful. No idea what that's all about...

This morning, he went out as usual. Looked all around, looked up into the dark sky, then stomped back up the steps and into the house and is now on his bed by the heater, chewing on his toenails.

It's been plenty cold here the last few days, and supposed to go down to single digits by Thursday night, and may even dip below zero by morning.

The south part of the state always gets more snow than we do. :) I was actually complaining about the total silliness of the "forecast" here. The last few years, it's all been so bogus it isn't worth looking at. But I still do sometimes. We need the moisture badly, so it's frustrating to see so little snow.

The roads here are plowed if enough snow falls, but they mostly wait until the storm is over except in town. I've seen it so deep there that they had to use dump trucks to take the snow out.  They have a few heavy pickup trucks with plows on the front for in town when it isn't that bad. The roads here are sanded, not salted, so the snow can just be pushed off to the side then.

Dang, I love living in the Wyoming banana belt. :)  But I'm prepared to survive if the bananas freeze! LOL

It snows here. Once every 10 to 20 years whether we need it or not.

Have I ever mentioned how much I LOATH winter? Well cold weather actually I don't really dislike winter itself. It's that freeze your pipes, your plants and pets that irks me. Not to mention that frostbite stuff that happens if you fall asleep in the hammock.
What's with that?

I'd much rather 8" tarantulas, 6" scorpions, 7' rattlers and various other varmints as well as 120 degree Augusts than to have my iced tea freeze before I can drink it.

stay safe all and stay warm.

Our house is on the verge of floating away due to all the rain! Unusual high temperatures for this time of year (upper 60's to low to mid 70's). There's supposed to be some cooler air heading our way over here in western TN. We have some wind damage and some leaks on the roof (don't even ask about the "urrrr" in dealing with the insurance company), but nothing worth moaning about in light of the deaths from these recent storms...

true, so true

Plenty of floods come spring time in Wyoming.  Just not where you live, Julio.  Come spring, that'd be between May and July, depending on elevation and luck, there are endless floods and flood damage to repair throughout the Black Hills.  From north of Hulett, all the way down to Rapid City and Hot Springs.

If that isn't "plenty" of water, there's an aquifer right under my land.  Just that we'd have to dig barely shy of 2000 feet through some serious rock to get to it. :P  Oh, and the zoning rules say we're not allowed to dig our own wells.  Water rights would have been available 60 miles northwest of my location, but an equivalent property would have cost 40 grand more.

----------------

As for weather, right now, in my little remote corner of icy hell, its 2nd of january, 30 degrees F (warmest its been in a week), no wind, sunny and about 12 inches of fresh fluffy powder outside (I didn't go outside for very long, yesterday, and judging there's no fresh buildup where I cleaned up, I assume its from New Year's eve.  As usual, we've had no carolers anywhere throughout town or the areas around, despite an unusually mild winter.  No shots or fireworks this year.  All in all an unusually mild winter after an unusually cold summer (I remember being told this is a normal cycle by all the old folks back in europe, and their pattern has held true.  Hot summers have brought "snowed in" winters, and this last very cold summer brought about this outright "almost pleasant' winter.  Last year we had negative F temps from before Christmas until after my birthday.  So i'll take what small blessings I can get. :P

Cloudy with rain. Lows around 39F. North wind to 7 MPH. Chance of precipitation 100 percent.

This is for tonight and this is the second full day of 100 percent rain (nice and light BUT cold and wet) and they are calling for similar for the next day or so. (Partial sun a possibility on Sunday and Monday is supposed to dry out With Sunshine !)

We did finally get some snow, about three inches over several days. Temps have been generally running higher than the forecast, but it is still cold. For example, the high predicted for today was 37, but it was 48 here at 2:15. The forecast low for last night was 9, but my minimum drop thermometer stopped at 11. And that's much closer than it was all last week.

Prediction was 60% probability of snow today, but it was clear until just about an hour ago. 70% probability of snow tonight, and we may just get some - but not likely much. No actual wind here for weeks now.

30+ inches in southern PA from Friday night into Sunday morning.  Quite an adventure drivin into work Saturday at 3AM, windy and snowing pretty good, about 3 inches or so at that point.  Then drivin home at 3PM with 18 to 20 inches down, snowing sideways and drifts everywhere.  Finally got the truck stuck 250 feet from the garage door.  Took a good 2 1/2 hours in windy, heavy snow with a single stage Toro snow thrower clearing 3 feet of drifted snow out of the alley a hundred feet or so to the city maintained alley where the truck was stuck.

But the wife made chicken corn soup so thick with goodies I would typify it more of a stew than soup. And chocolate crinkle cookies.

Light Breeze?

What is a light breeze to you?

Here in Wyoming a light breeze is 15 to 20 mph
a strong wind is 30 to 40 mph
High wind warnings go out at over 65 mph

Not all of Wyoming. Here in Newcastle we have days of NO wind, sometimes many days together. A friend put up a small wind generator, supposed to be good down to 5 MPH. He took it down because there wasn't enough wind to even turn the blades much of the time.

Now, we do have wind at times. Usually just at the start of a good storm. We don't pay much attention to it. :)

There are about 12 of those big wind turbines out east of Casper.
they have to stop running them from time to time because they put out too much electricity for the city to use.
maybe it is just in the Casper area with all the wind.

'Bout time!  Had to use heater more than once this season - as opposed to last winter.  The below is why one sees MN, UT, MT, WA, WY, Alberta, B.C., IL & IA plates among others for 5-6 mos. of the year here.  If it weren't for the Saguaro you'd figure you were in another state at the local stores.

We had some snow, generally light rain most of the day, fast moving clouds and a high temp of 47 yesterday. We have not seen ANY below zero temps in this area all winter, with 3 F being the low at my house a while back. This is the warmest winter I've experienced here... and if we could get some significant rain, I'd be loving it totally. I've only worn my good winter coat once this winter! And then it was too warm and I took it off when I got to town.

02.16.16
Overnight
A 20 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. West wind around 7 mph.
Tuesday
A 20 percent chance of snow showers before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the morning.
Tuesday Night
Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph.
Wednesday
Partly sunny, with a high near 51. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the morning.
Wednesday Night
Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph becoming southwest after midnight.
Thursday
Partly sunny, with a high near 60. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 32 mph.

Supposed to be 50+ this Saturday!  I think I'll spend most of it outside and dream about gardening.

I'm going to attempt to start turning the soil in my raised beds. I don't think they are frozen this year. Tempted to plant some snow peas after that. I've got plenty of seed and it MIGHT give me a heck of a head start. March is often our coldest month, so it's a gamble, but even the remote possibility of having peas in April is very tempting. I could also sow seed for turnips, rutabagas and even beets. The seed won't germinate until the temp is right anyway. I had loads of volunteer herbs and onions come up from seed that overwintered last year.

Let's start our new garden thread!! I'm on the way over there to do so. LOL

That is the area we live in, close to the Granville/Vance airport.

I was watching the Doppler on the web at work as the thing appeared to wipe down my house, luckily it missed.

The weird part was all the black on the radar return that was from intense hail soaking up the radar signal.

Downgraded to 40% chance of ~1 inch of snow.

I got a propane bill for my heat yesterday, showing that I'm $500 in the black on my budget payments. Called the company. Will stop making budget payments until we renegotiate for next winter's heating at the end of May.

Humidity    20%
Wind Speed    S 10 mph
Barometer    29.79 in
Dewpoint    21F (-6C)

Actual temp at my hose at 3PM was 66 degrees. Light wind from the SW, and increasing cloud cover. No idea what the barometer reading is... I don't have one anymore.

There were some hail-hit areas, but that's not what I meant. When you look at a radar sometimes the weather event you're watching is just a giant line heading your way. I jokingly call it the wall of Noah (lots of rain) or Christmas (snow) or hate (for severe storms). :) Sunday night was two back-to-back huge walls (of hate) heading our way.

Oh my! Interesting. I've never thought of any kind of weather as hateful. I can see about 75 miles to the west from here, and most of our weather comes from that direction. I've seen the black walls of weather coming many, many times over the years, but they just mean I need to check a few provisions and make sure I have enough water in jugs and firewood inside if it's cold. If we're lucky, we see the streaks of white in the black wall and know it contains snow in the winter and hail in the warmer times. If we do see that, we can make whatever provisions are possible. But hateful? Takes humans for that, I think. :)

Some things to remember:
Wyoming snow is dry, usually, not wet and heavy like that around the big lakes. Makes a difference. Humidity is generally low too.
Wyoming is part of the great American desert. Some parts don't get much snow at all. :) We got ONE flake yesterday, far as I could tell. sigh
This has been a very unusual winter, even for Wyoming. The first winter I was here, we got several feet of snow from one storm... just that once, but it was a real surprise after Southern California! LOL

Chilly lately - today only 76oF high today.  51o F right now.  High country got snow.   17o F right now at the Grand Canyon - I always get funny looks from folks who are traveling up to the Grand Canyon - they're dressed in shorts and flip-flops ... "You're taking a coat, right?"   "Why?"

Got about 1 inch more last night.

nothing really to write home about.
at least not for me.
been through bigger winters back in Chicago than have seen here.

oh well, maybe next winter

Some things to remember:
Wyoming snow is dry, usually, not wet and heavy like that around the big lakes. Makes a difference. Humidity is generally low too.
Wyoming is part of the great American desert. Some parts don't get much snow at all. :) We got ONE flake yesterday, far as I could tell. sigh
This has been a very unusual winter, even for Wyoming. The first winter I was here, we got several feet of snow from one storm... just that once, but it was a real surprise after Southern California! LOL

Dawg
you need to remember, that without the white stuff in winter, there will be no green stuff thru summer. So, hope for the mountains to get lots of accumulation and let the flats be dry.

Oh I am not complaining about the lack of white stuff.
it is just everyone that told me how bad it was out here.
So far, it has not been so bad.

I was use to having over 4 feet each winter.
so this winter is on the lite side for me.

and I do understand the different of dry snow and wet snow.

it is funny to watch all these so call Wyomites that can not get around the city when there is only 2 to 4 inches on the ground.
because they have the wrong tires on, but that does not look cool, so I guess sliding into things is.

The problem is that it's the "city." And I'll bet anything none of those folks are FROM Wyoming. They all likely came from somewhere with no snow. LOL

Well, I am not from Wyoming ether, but I do know how to drive in the winter.
and that is to prep the truck for the winter before it is winter, like having the right type of tires on it.
and then everything else you might need later to get through the white stuff.

So I guess that makes me a prepper. LOL

Well, I am not from Wyoming ether,

Lots of us like that, of course.  Most of us don't live in the city, that's all. LOL  I had not done much driving on the snow and ice, but I figured it out pretty quickly. I had lots of experience driving on and in sand, which probably helped.

I was responding to you calling those do das "Wyomingites." That's a matter of attitude, not place of residence. You are already a "Wyomingite." The latte and cupcake bunch in Cheyenne and Casper, Laramie and Jackson Hole never will be... even if they were born here.

Spazzy weather over here, but not unusual for this time of year or locale. Lots of rain and wind, but some really lovely days that allows me and the Little Turkeys to go on some nice, long walks. Lots of nature sightseeing to do, especially since some of the nastier weather has shown some significant erosion in some parts of our neighborhood. Fun times!

Warm here now, very unusual, but still no rain. Lots of clouds and predicted rain in the 30 to 60% range, but none falls. It's going to be very dry this summer, I'm afraid.

38 degrees right now, and we've had a light sprinkle of snow and a little rain this morning. If it kept up like this for a month, we might get enough moisture to equal a real rain storm... but that's not going to happen either. sigh I like it here just fine... only wish it would rain for real...

Alternating light rain and slushy snow. I think we're getting more moisture today than we had all winter. Temp has dropped from 42 at 4AM to 41 now, going for a "high" today of 39.  Oh, and a "low" of 32.

This is weird.  May already and no sign of winter.  It will be the "shortest day" in 6 weeks and still the sun is shining most days and the average temperature is 17 or 18 degrees.

I remember in years past I used to wake up in the middle of the night coz it was cold at this time of year, now I wake up coz it is hot.

It is cloudy today, but far from cold.

but will be back in the mid 90's later in the week.

very dry here, humidity is around 10 to 15 %

7 fires burning around the state here, close to about 100,000 acres burned total.

there is a ban on open fires here in the state. so no BBQ's this weekend

we need the rain.

The temperature has been all over the map the last two weeks or so. Last Saturday it was 96 degrees by noon, and today it probably won't hit 80. It is just 70 degrees now at 9:30AM, with a light cloud cover. About 20% chance of rain by tonight, but I won't hold my breath. However, our worst hailstorm last year came on an afternoon with a 20% "chance," so you can't always discount that "chance."

We do most certainly need the rain. Just NO hail, please and thank you very much.   :shakehead:

Last triple digits was about 8 days ago - time to start looking for cold weather gear stowed away.  Possible last use of A/C until April/May.  Probably used heater about 20 days last winter - previous year was only once.  Just like leaves turning in other places, the number of MN, IA, IL license plates etc. increasing signal a season change - leaves don't do 30 in a 45 in the left lane during rush hour, though. :

Definite weather change here in NE Wyoming. Light rain most of yesterday. We usually have most of our rain in the spring and early summer, but had little then this year, and more than usual since mid August. Temperatures very cool the last week or so, only 43 right now and going for a high of 59. Never got to that yesterday. I have very low heat on in the orchid bathroom now, first heat this year. I'll watch the forecast carefully and hope to guess right when it will be necessary to pick the rest of the green tomatoes before it freezes. Definitely "almost winter" in Wyoming.

Yeah... that's the way it rolls here some years. We say we have four seasons anyway: Winter, still winter, sort of summer and almost winter.

The short "summer" is wonderful after nearly 60 years of desert dry and terrible heat in so. Cal. The spring is invigorating, but much like the desert winter. The fall is the best, with cool temps, colorful plants, and the indescribably wonderful "fall" smell in the wind outdoors.  And I've been amazed at how well I've adapted to the actual winter with snow and cold. :)

friggin' cold!  69oF inside - winter visitors (from Midwest/Canada) walking around in shorts and flip-flops.  Had to delay a patient transport to the high country due to snow/rain.  No guardrails and 5000+ feet on unimproved road [ok, I'm exaggerating - it wasn't that bad - but I don't want to be lead video on the local news being airlifted in a basket stretcher from an overturned wheelchair van in a canyon]

Approx. 4000 ft and 5500 ft:

hehehe  lowest point around here is 5000ft. most if not all secondary roads are unimproved roads.

Casper Mountain has over 40 inches of snow as does the Tetons.

only about a inch here in Casper, but the wind is wicked right now, 40mph with gusts to 65mph

It was 5 degrees outside when I got up at 3 this morning. Gradually dropped, and now at 7:15 AM it is 1 degree... supposed to go down to -4 by tomorrow morning. Bet it dips lower than that.  A little more snow yesterday, but not much - and none this morning. "Warming" trend starting around Thursday.

Today
Scattered flurries before 10am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 11. Wind chill values between -3 and -11. Northwest wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 17 mph.
Tonight
Partly cloudy, with a low around -4. Wind chill values between -8 and -18. North wind 7 to 9 mph.
Wednesday
Partly sunny, with a high near 5. Wind chill values between -10 and -20. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph.
Wednesday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around -8. Wind chill values between -15 and -21. North wind around 8 mph.
Thursday
Sunny, with a high near 10. North wind around 6 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.
Thursday Night
Partly cloudy, with a temperature falling to near 1 by 8pm, then rising to around 8 during the remainder of the night. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph.

Title: Re: Current weather conditions

Holding steady at -15 here. More new snow overnight. About 6 to 8 inches over all... but hard to measure due to the wind and drifting. Some drifts close to the house are already about a foot. No telling what some of them are out in the field or against the neighbor's garage.

I have a fairly tall chopping block at the wood pile. Over the years I've learned how to estimate the drift there. When I can no longer see the chopping block, I have to figure we've gotten some good snow, drift or not. LOL

Edit: 8:30 am now... opened the curtains. Temp dipped briefly to -18, back up to -16 now. And yep, the top of the chopping block is barely visible. Laddie went out for a while, and had a ball vanishing into the drifts near the fence. I think he's got enough snow for a few face dips now. LOL

There is usually little difference between my home In/Out thermometer and the weather conditions reported on line. But this morning there was a fair difference. At 4 AM, my unit said it was -19 degrees outside, and the web page said it was -24. Forecast was for -14 minimum. Unfortunately, since the prediction had been fairly reliable for the last month or so, I didn't leave enough heat on upstairs. My kitchen was 47 degrees, and my office was down to 45. Downstairs it was 50 degrees. Humidity down to 16% in the main rooms, almost down to 30% in the orchid bathroom, so I had to address that fast. I work hard to keep that room up to at least 50%, or better, 60% all the time.

Anyway, now at 8:30, I've come to the blessed point where it is time to take OFF a layer of clothing. 60 degrees in the kitchen, and 58 in the office. Just about perfect with hot coffee and soup. :)

OK, now here is a puzzle for you. The back lot and driveway got about 8 inches of snow the last few days. Since the start of the first storm, there have been zero tracks in the snow. Not a rabbit, or deer... nothing. The snow has ripples from the wind yesterday, but not a single track as far as my eye can see. Weird...

The wind blown snow has covered up the tracks that Quintas made last night, so the same thing could be happening there too.
the wind has also blown all the snow off the car and truck. very windy day today.

Sure, while the snow was falling and when the temp dipped to -24, I can see that possible... but it never happened before, and it has been more than 48 hours now. It will be interesting to see if there are any tracks when the sun comes up today. Right now it is 1 degree, and supposed to climb up to 30 for a high. We'll see. I need to get to the grocery store. :) And the mail box.

Last evening, it looked like there was a tiny trail from the woodpile to end in the center of the driveway. There is a small hole in the snow at the end of the trail... and my first thought was that a big bird swooped and took off with a mouse... but that's speculation at best.

A balmy 18 degrees outside right now. Feels great after -24 the other morning. I've never owned a trenchcoat. LOL I have several coats of various weights. Won't need the heavy one when I go to town later today (if I can get through the snow drift on the driveway). Going for a high of 39, and I'll be basking in the warmth. LOL

OH, and there is now a track in the snow out back. A single deer went through yesterday morning. Wonder if there will be more when the sun comes up today. Amazing not to see rabbits all over the place for three days!!

An astonishing 34 degrees out this morning at 4:30.  Supposed to be a blizzard by tomorrow, but not expecting extreme low temperatures.

Plenty of deer and rabbit tracks in the field and driveway now. Actually, a big mess between the melting snow and the very large track of the trash truck that came through on Wednesday. I even saw a rabbit out there yesterday, so I guess the critters came back from wherever it was they were hiding. :)

Finally got out to the store yesterday afternoon. As feared, I couldn't get back up the hill on the south driveway due to the drift in one place. I walked to the house and got the snow shovel, and made a path for both wheels, through the drift down to the gravel. It wasn't deep or long, but it was sure a workout for an old lady!  Got the car to the door, unloaded the groceries and put them away, then collapsed for the evening. :) By some miracle, no aches or pains this morning from my adventure in the snow, so all is good. Sometimes we surprise ourselves.

!2 degrees now, and going for a high of 27.  We'll see if I can get out to get to the range today. Nobody plows the road up there either, so might not get in. Wish I had a 4WD, darn it.

Got down to -3 early this morning, but now up to a nice 12. Got up to 21 yesterday, so I went to town. The piles of snow everywhere are quite unusual, though I've seen it before. The worst is that all of the streets and many sidewalks are coated in ice and VERY dangerous.  So, I managed to get home and brought the groceries up on the deck. Stepped inside with the second bags and fell hard on some snow/water on the tile that came off my boots from the first trip. Gimpy mama this morning, I can tell you... but nothing broken and I'm feeling better than I expected.

The worst part of falling is the difficulty getting back on my feet. I'm very grateful I fell - if I had to - on the kitchen floor instead of out in the snow.

When I got up at 3:30, the outside temp. was 20. Now, at 6:40, it is down to 15. Been doing that lately. These are balmy temps, for sure. I'm really looking forward to 44 degrees tomorrow! Maybe the snow will melt enough for me to get into the garden to dump the kitchen garbage in a tub. There has been a serious drift against that gate since Christmas. :) And no, I don't look for much more snow tonight... but, you just never know. :) I will have to figure out some other place to put the garbage.

Today
Partly sunny, with a high near 32. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.
Tonight
A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy, with a temperature rising to around 31 by 4am. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph.
Monday
Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. East wind around 6 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
Monday Night
Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. Southwest wind 7 to 13 mph becoming northwest after midnight.
Tuesday
Mostly cloudy, with a high near 31. West wind 3 to 7 mph.
Tuesday Night

10F here in Southern Vermont this morning. High of 17F expected. Low tonight: -1F. Maybe some snow flurries this afternoon. Pretty normal for New England in January.

Thaw coming mid-week. Highs in the forties, with rain.

Hey there! Good to see you.

It is 53 degrees outside now, and the snow is MELTING! :) I can see patches of brown dirt and dried grass here and there. YIPPEE

Mid-30s and light rain.  Which means very slick roads.  Gravel roads were fine but once I reached blacktop...  So I'm working from home today.  As long as I have an internet connection I'm golden.  Plink away on my laptop, sip coffee and stare out the window at the forest.  Ahhh...

Supposed to be 23 degrees here for a low tonight. I start my seeds in waves, so when I plant the first ones early it won't matter if they freeze. If they survive, I'm a little ahead of the game.

Looking at maybe getting some Guinea hens. The store where I work the greenhouse is offering them as a special order for almost $7.00 each. Pretty pricey, but would be worth it if I had a place to keep them while they grew up. Once mature, they seem to be able to take care of themselves nicely. A neighbor has a flock of 7 or 8 (hard to count because they are never still) and they roam the whole neighborhood. They love to tease my dog. LOL

Guinea hens are tick-vacuums.  They will keep grasses clean of the blood-sucking vermin.  However, they are NOISY!

I love the sound they make. The flock that comes by here is quiet unless they see me or the dog. They run up to the fence and have quite a conversation with Laddie, then wander away. Fun to watch.

Got down to 19 degrees by dawn today, snow all over and in all of the garden tubs. Hope at least the spinach and the chamomile survive. The rest is probably toast. sigh  Back up to 37 degrees by 7AM... but the high is only expected to reach 49... we shall see.

We had a run of cool weather too, even a late frost. Lots of light rain, hit or miss thunderstorms, but none serious so far. One light hail that tore up the spinach and chard, but not too bad. All the apples seem in place on the trees! YAHOO

Summer finally arrived for real here. The 4th of July saw a high temp of 101!  Then, night before last we had a gully washer rain and some serious wind for a little while. Cooled it down some, but looking for a high of 91 today. We get the usual thunderclouds each evening, but I don't expect much more rain until fall. Wind, you bet. But the blessing is that, so far, there has been no hail. My garden looks a bit frazzled by the wind, but everything is growing nicely. Should have cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers in a week or so.  First frost expected mid to late September, so I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Mama our 91* I would take in a minute. I am down here in MO and it is 95* and 90+ % humidity. I am melting in the shade!

Yes, the humidity makes all the difference. :) Current temp here is 78 degrees, humidity 24% and dropping fast. We're under a fire watch for the next few days since dry thunderstorms with lightning are possible each afternoon and evening. Most of the wildfires we have here are lightning caused.

I went to MO once, years ago for a 4th of July weekend. I was used to the 100+ temps in the Calif. desert, but at 5 or 10% humidity. Thought I'd die there in the sticky soup they call "air."  And someone there tried to tell me it was a "dry year." Oh sure. LOL

And mi6a2lm, the hot pavement thing was a regular deal when I lived in the So. Cal. desert. I remember one day when I was walking the mile or so from home to work and really wishing I had a car! The air temp was about 110 degrees, and it had been hot like that for weeks. Suddenly, it rained hard for a minute or two and you could see the steam coming off the road in massive clouds. I ran to get under some cottonwood trees and waited for the steam bath to stop. Didn't take long.

Depends on how fast it is moving and how much sand it is carrying. In the desert, 8 inches of fast moving water in a low place might sweep a person away. More can easily wash away a car. Fast moving water in the desert can be very dangerous, regardless of the depth. :) People who live there don't enter fast moving water like that. Strangers often must be rescued.

Very strange summer here, so far. We had a few weeks of 80s and even a few days in the 90s in July, but today's high was only 68. Good gentle rain off and on through the day. Some brisk wind at times too. I went to the Junior Rodeo at the fairgrounds this morning, and it's going to be a major job to get the superglue mud off of my boots tomorrow. I spent most of the day in my flannel house dress, and needed a light bed jacket when I went down to read about 4 PM. Had to take some strong medicine for pain, but when I put the lights out at 8PM.... I could not sleep!! No particular pain, but just couldn't sleep. Very, very strange.

59 degrees outside now at 10:30 PM... and the forecast is calling for more rain tomorrow with 71 the expected high. Shortest summer ever...

Short summer indeed Mama.  Yesterday the high around my parts was barely 75 degrees.  In August?!?  A few tomatoes are finally starting to turn red but these plants need heat!  I'm wondering if the corn fields will ever dry out in time for the harvest.

The average high for the next ten days in my parts will be a 'scorching' 79 degrees.  Global warming my derriere...
Title: Re: Current weather conditions
Post by: MamaLiberty on August 07, 2017, 08:20:13 am
No tomatoes ripening here, and only a very few have formed at all. Two of the largest fruits developed blossom end rot - due to the cold and wet, I think - so I cut off the bad part and stewed them with some onions and peppers with a chicken breast. I never tried to use green tomatoes before, though my mother loved them, but these were not half bad. Maybe I won't give them all away this year. The snap beans are producing very little, many of them malformed. I may pull the plants this week if things don't improve. Should just forget the beans and plant some broccoli and cabbage. I have seeds for rutabaga and turnips too. They like the cool weather.  I'd rather eat snap beans... but sometimes you just have to go with what actually works. :(

Light to moderate rain the last few days, only frosted lightly once but it may get bad tonight. 30 degree low predicted, so we'll see. The garden is pretty much done, picked the last of the peppers yesterday. Still have a few cabbages and some onions out there. May take them in today, though the cabbages are very small yet. Some of the onions got very large! I like medium size best, but will just cut and dry these monsters. Plan to plant more next year, as they are very good tasting compared to the store bought. So far, I've eaten most of the tomatoes that have gotten red... can't call them really "ripe," and they have little flavor... but better than nothing.  I've got bags and bags of peppers frozen, so at least I'll have some good vitamins and stuff from them this winter.

Heh heh... already writing my garden plans for next year. :)

Temp here at 0300 was 37, then at 0630 was down to 32 via my outdoor thermometer. The tomato and pepper plants remaining look ok now, but it will be interesting to see them in another few hours. May just go ahead and pull them. No snow, but we've had intermittent rain for several days now.

It was only 57 degrees inside this morning, so I've put heat on for the first time. Awful early for it, but the logs never actually warmed up much this last summer (or the summer before!), so I expect to have to heat more at least for a while. Will go around the house locking the windows shut for the duration, and start putting up the winter duct tape on the door frames.

I can't remember exactly when the snow started this week, but I think it was around at least that long. You guys get much more snow than we do here. So these piddling little amounts don't mean much to  you.  Sorry, dear, but I'm measuring the start of winter with the start of needing to put the heaters on at night. And that was easily two weeks ago. :) The snow is just a bonus. LOL

This has been one of the most confusing winters In my memory. Yesterday the highs in the 50's sunny, snow finally melting off from the Christmas day dump. Today, High of 16* and already a 1/2 inch of white fluffy rain. ??? Whooda thunk in Wyoming?

Weather has always been a mystery to me, wherever I lived. I keep careful records of the weather for various reasons, and I've got to tell you there seems to be no consistency. Rough patterns, occasionally, but nothing you can count on, ever. The government predictions are mostly a joke. And did you notice that they often change several times in a single day? LOL What's the use of a prediction that changes constantly?

Anyway, I'm glad I can just stay home. :)

Was -6 degrees outside here this morning. Up to 18 degrees now. But that will drop soon.

Weather has been brutally cold the past week or so.  Every morning I wake up and the temp gauge reads well below zero.  Negative teens most times!  It does crawl up to single digits during the day but my gosh this winter has gotten off to a cold start!  Wood stove has been roaring every day.

12 positive degrees this morning at 3:45. Has risen to 15 at 7AM. Fire still burning, but I won't add more wood now, but when it warms up a little out there, I'll bring in more of it. A snowdrift covered my woodpile, so it is quite challenging to bring in. Hope the drift melts some today. :)

a bit cloudy - that's a major thing when you're acclimated to clear blue skies about 300 days of the year -

have seen uptick in flu cases, normally when we transport folks back to skilled nursing/rehab facilities it's for things other than just being sick, but when I ask about patient (where do we hurt, what are they in for) the past few have been flu-related

https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-health/2017/12/20/seasonal-flu-arizona-up-758-percent-last-year-report-shows/969055001/
---
The Arizona Department of Health Services said there have been 2,976 reported cases between mid-October and Dec. 20.

That's compared to 347 cases in the same period last year a 758-percent increase in flu activity.

have seen uptick in flu cases,

And I'll bet most had their "flu shot." Very suspicious. But add to that, generally poor nutrition and other factors, The SNF environment is not a healthy one, even in the best places. And there are so many poor ones.

I'm not surprised at large numbers of elderly being affected. I've never had the flu in my life. Wish I knew why and could bottle it...

 :sign10:

Not many. :) I've been bitten by a mosquito maybe four times in my life. Each time was through clothing. If they land on my skin, they take off immediately. The only bug that bites me very often is a deer fly. Those things are vicious... and have no sense of taste, I guess. LOL

Ever since my family and I have stopped taking the flu shot (going on 5 years now) we have stopped getting the flu.  It also helps that my wife feeds us fruits and veggies every day, breathe country air, play outside a lot, wash hands often, etc!

Yes, all those things do help. Keeping your immune system healthy is the first task. Unfortunately, the "flu shot" actually damages your immune system, so I'm glad you got past that. I never had the flu... and I never had the "shot" either. In fact, I've had almost no vaccines, and almost no antibotics either. Works for me. :)

Going up to 45 degrees today. YAY!! And I got the last of the ice scraped off the back deck yesterday. Now I probably won't fall and break my neck.... until the next snowstorm, of course. sigh

Snowed in for the third time already this winter. The car is stuck in a drift in the south driveway, and it looks like it will stay there for a while. We got about 7 inches of new snow last week, and another good inch yesterday. I need to get a shelter built for the firewood. It's hard to bring enough in after I dig it out, and it is often quite wet.

Going for a low of -12 tonight. Still snowing... all day today, heavy at times. The man came to clear my driveway this morning, and now it doesn't look like he was here. I asked him why he was plowing while it was still snowing... but he said he has to keep up with it at least some or it will get too deep for his little bitty tractor to push. What do I know? LOL

Spring is still quite a distant dream for us here. :)

this the largest snow for the season so far here.
we could still use the water here, so this is good.

Still -11 degrees now at 9 AM. Still snowbound. The county plowed the road... and totally blocked both of my driveway entrances. Not that it matters much... I'm not going anywhere. :) My neighbor will come tomorrow and plow my driveway, and then another neighbor will take me to town. And, BTW, I help them out with gardening and make bread... I have a wonderful community here.

Here is a picture of the yard this morning, showing the corgi trail around to the side yard.

Just wish I had a "heating system." I have several radiator type oil filled space heaters and the wood stove upstairs. It's a real challenge to use those to maintain a livable temperature in the winter, much less in sub-zero weather. I'm happy if I wake up to find the upstairs between 50 and 55 degrees. The wood stove heats it up faster than the radiators, but not terribly fast. I wear lots of layers of clothing this time of year. It's my hands and feet that suffer if it is below 50. Don't know how I'd fare if it got much colder. I can't plug in more than one heater per room... blows the circuit breakers.

Still snowed in. :( The neighbor who was taking me out to the store now has her truck in the shop, so I'm really stuck. sigh  My car is entombed in lots of snow and ice. Probably be March before I can get it dug out. Longer if it snows much more. I'm tired of winter.

As for ice skating to the outhouse... I can't imagine. At my age, I don't always make it to the nice potty in the indoors bathroom. Thank goodness for the indoor washing machine and dryer. When it is really cold, I often "don't make it." LOL

Given the average lifespan of most "primitive" people, I don't think so. :) In any case, it's too late to go primitive at my age, and I don't believe that running water and indoor plumbing are "luxuries." But each to his/her own, of course.

This, I think.

I remember the time my first husband and I went camping... first time camping for me. The tent collapsed early in the evening as I was dressing for bed..( very exciting!), and I was escorted from the outhouse to the tent by a bear in the middle of the night. I survived... but just barely. LOL

What happens if you break a leg? Ice skating to the loo will take on a whole new dimension then. :)

I have a "back up" bucket with a fancy seat and lid. Plum uptown.

I do wish I had a pard here to drag me inside if its winter. I can see a time coming when I might reconsider my Daughters standing offer to a spare room but it's in the suburbs of a big city.  I would prefer to have a granddaughter move here. I would move out and live in a tent again, if one would.

I'd like that too. Unfortunately, both sons will likely remain in So. Calif. As a simple alternative, I carry a tiny burner cell phone with several people in the speed dial list. All neighbors who are willing to come help me if I get sick or fall down. I used to fall a lot, and then had no way to get help. Was terrifying. Now, several of the neighbors call me from time to time just to check up on me. :)

Winter finally hit last week - down into upper '20's in outlying areas.  We might have hit a low just slightly above freezing.  Had to turn on (electric) oven and put fan beside it to circulate air ... all that so I can say I didn't turn on the (central) heat this winter!
