My old man was in London during the beginning of the war (summer of 44) before he hopped over to France for the festivities in the hedgerows. He said as long as you could hear the V1 you were OK. When you heard the sputter and nothing, you hit the deck.

My dad was in London during a V2 attack. He said there was no noise until the explosion because they
were in free fall on a ballistic path. He says he slept through it.
