Goodbye to PoL?
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:34:20 AM »

The Price of Liberty will be nine years old on the first of October, 2012. By the first of September, I must decide whether or not to continue, paying the hosting bill for another year. I will probably keep the domain, just to prevent someone from abusing it, but would consider a transfer if someone wanted to continue the tradition. I've done most of it all alone for all that time... and though I really appreciate the contributions of ZooT, Nathan and a few others over the years, it's starting to be a struggle to carry on sometimes. I wonder if there isn't a better use for my time.

Readership hasn't changed much in years, and I get very little feedback. That didn't improve even after I promoted it quite a bit at Facebook. Very few have posted anything in this area of TMM either.

So... I'm wondering if anyone really would even miss it. I wonder if anyone finds value in it at all.

Your thoughts and suggestions are most welcome.

I used to check it out once a week, but I've stopped doing that of late. Don't remember why. Probably because I put it too far down my daily visits page. Sigh...

The Price of Liberty will become a Wordpress blog by the middle of September. I will retain the domain name, and transfer to another server. Hopefully, the URL will be the same, but if not I will get the word out.

I'm really looking forward to this simplification of my life. :)

Glad to hear you will be continuing the Price of Liberty.  I try to check it once a week, but sometimes I fall behind.  So many great websites, so little time....

Thanks. It's been an experience already. I originally offered the domain name for sale and the howls of outrage were pretty fierce! I had intended to do a blog anyway, so this worked out just fine. :)

I really just found this after following a link you posted over at WRSA.

If you want to make TPoL a WP blog that's easy to do - and your domain ("http://www.thepriceofliberty.org") can point to the new WP blog.

In other words, when a user opens their browser and types (or selects a bookmark pointing to) "http://www.thepriceofliberty.org" the link will take them straight to "http://mamma-libertys-new-wp-blog.wordpress.com" - it's called a "redirect" and should be included in the price of your domain registration (IOW should cost no more than the <$35/year you're already paying for your domain.

In fact, if you really wanted to, it's not super-difficult to archive and upload all your old content to WP as well!

I'm an IT "Enterprise Consultant" by trade, and after more than 20 years (though web services weren't much of my business) I could do most of this in my sleep...  If I can help with this just shoot me an e-mail, I'll give you my phone number and we can talk it through!

I'd be honored to help if I can!

Thanks so much, DD! I have found new hosting and he's supposed to have it all set up for me to start blogging in the next few weeks. I am paid up until Sept. 19 where I am. If this guy doesn't get things set up in time, I'll have to pay for another year there, but they can set up WP blogs as easily as anyone, so they say, and my archives are already there. I have all my archives on my own HD anyway, and don't plan to have all of them available anyway. Nobody but me has looked at most of them over the years, but I'll have a rich trove of things I can republish if I don't have anything to say sometimes.  HA HA.... imagine THAT. LOL

If you know of decent hosting for under $85. a year, I'd be interested. Infinology has done a good job for me the last nine years and I'm not complaining, but my budget is small.

My domain name only costs me $15. a year.

Update on the progress of converting PoL to a blog. The hosting change has been made, though there are still some glitches with archives links. We should have that ironed out soon. Target date to start the new blog is October 1, 2012. This is a significant date because it is the 9th anniversary of the first issue of The Price of Liberty.

The blog will have full comment features, so I hope everyone will visit and leave a message... but I'll continue this subforum as well so we can discuss tech issues and other things that might not be related to the current blog posts.

Anyway, I hope to see plenty of my friends here at my new digs. :)
