Tappan on Survival
« on: April 19, 2012, 02:18:30 AM »

An excellent if dated book on survival. Apparently it influenced even today many of the big names of the survival movement.

If someone were to ask me which writer to read first, Tappan or Rawles, I would say Tappan first. Even if it only ends up being the only book you read about survival(hopefully not, given how dated the book is for current info).

All the chapters are worthwhile. The two that seems to be the biggies, beyond retreating and food would be the chapters on firearms and communications. Even if you already read Tappan's other book Survival Guns, you'll still want to read the chapter on guns. And I would read Tappan's chapter on communication before going to someone else's, like Rawles. Despite the dated materials, it will start you on the right path provided you think about what you are looking for.

Tappan's books, Tappan on Survival and Survival Guns should be in everyone's personal library. You won't regret it in my opinion.

Its surprising how little Biographical material is available about a Trend-Setter like Mel Tappan.....

But Wikipedia does have a page on him nowadays.

Did you know that his wife's Maiden Name was "Mack"? She was heir to the Mack Truck Estate--hence Tappan being able to finance his Survivalism and his Super Beaucoup Gun Collection.

{Though he plainly states that some of the Guns in "Survival Guns" are borrowed.}

Nancy Tappan still lives on the land that Mel bought. Nowadays its a Vineyard/Winery {Which really isn't at cross purposes to Survival Considerations.}

Please read "Survival Guns". It will change your life!

Seconded on the book Survival Guns. As a matter of fact I've already reviewed/started a thread about it.
