I've heard you can shoot 45 lc out of a .454. Is this correct?

Yeah, that's right.

If you can shoot .45 LC - .45 Long Colt Shotshells are available, possibly a reload with the plastic shotshell insert with #4 buck would fill the bill...

To be honest for home defense, I would not even think about reaching for my pistol, I have several Remington 870’s filled with #4 buck low-power 24-28 pellets I loaded for this use.

Late at night I want a longer gun I can use that is simple and intimidating, I can hold it with both hands, and in a pinch would make a good club...  :deadhorse: - you just can’t beat a shotgun 20,12,16 or other at pistol ranges... even with “low power” loads it is what it is...

I ordered the new Lee 00 buckshot mould that will pour 18 pellets at one time - I scrounge lead at the range (with a sieve and a shovel we can get over 50 pounds of lead in about 10 min of sifting) and that is free lead for pellets, bullets (pre-mixed for hardness), bullet cores and slugs...

good point but the long guns i have readily available don't make good home defense weapons because they have very long barrels, something on the order of 28-30 in.

BUMP!
Bump, bump, bumpity bump.

Bumped for being, in my opinion, a hall of fame thread.

By the way, I fixed some formatting problems with a couple of my posts in this oldie but goodie, and updated them with new feedback and bonus content as well.

Is it me or my bad luck, but Beretta handguns have the worse triggers? I think they are too PC.The best combat handgun, no question, is a CZ 75 in 9MM. If you didn't know a CZ 75 is so great let me give you some info. First it is a improved Browning design, they took his 1935 model and 86'd the mag safety creating a better trigger pull, added a double single trigger action, plus increased mag capacity. There are many options but I am old school and prefer a side safety over a decocker. If you like 1911's than you will like the CZ 75 because everything is in the same place.

Another CZ75 based pistol is the AR24 imported by armalite, I received one last month or so and have been able to fire it in two range sessions 100 rounds the first time and 250 the second time.

I will report with photos when I get the chance.

The only handgun I own is a kit-built Philadelphia Derringer the parts of which were made by Traditions in Spain.

It's the .45 percussion model and takes #11 caps. You can use blackpowder or pyrodex. I used copper jacketed 000 buck pellets and a newspaper patch instead of the more expensive minnie balls available at the gun store. I once fired a homemade steel spike out of it. I don't recommend that.

The barrel is only 2 inches, so I don't know why they bothered rifling it.

Due to an improperly drilled breech, I had to take the nipple off every time I loaded the gun so I could prime it... It won't fire unless you do. YMMV

It kicked like a bloody mule. The grip is a tad short. I can only fit 2 fingers on it.

Because if they didn't, it would require a tax stamp and dealing directly with BATFEces to register it as an AOW.

Yet another CZ clone is the Jericho 941, better known in the US as the IMI Baby Desert Eagle.  The Jericho 941 is actually an Israeli clone of the Italian clone of the CZ.  Because of the way they designed the front end (has the same triangular shape used on the full sized Desert Eagle), it is noze heavy, but that actually helps reduce muzzle flip when firing.

How does that effect the balance of the pistol with a full magazine versus the empty mag?
I have heard of folks not liking some semi-auto pistols because the balance [aim point, etc] changes as the rounds are removed from the magazine with repeated firing.

  • Riflemen are made not born.

I like the Cz-75 and all its clones, except for the fact that it wasn't very popular in the USA.
Fewer parts, more expensive magazines, and IIRC there were several designs that weren't interchangable.
Too bad, its a great design.
What was the most widely sold model, and which was the best?
I will own one someday.

I think the CZ75-B model was the most sold in the US.
