Well...I am a newly minted English teacher here in southern California. My students read whatever they want to...but they must read SOMETHING during the first 15 minutes of class. We don't really have enough "free reading" books, fiction OR non-fiction, so I have amassed a good sized supply of books ranging from Stephen King all the way to biographies of historical figures.

The students seem to love it, and I haven't had a problem yet. I guess only time will tell....

Then again, I also force my students to think for themselves, which is really difficult for my 10th grade HONORS students!!

What grade are they? My Granma was a teacher for most of my childhood, and she works at a bookstore now.

She has her own library practically, and works in the kids dept of that bookstore. I'm sure she could recommend some more books or if we find some I can get her to part with(I'm not fond of packing and carrying all her books every time we move), well you get the idea I'm sure. PM me if you're interested.

If you need more books, I'll bet we have lots of folks who would be glad to send you some.  I always have extra books around, my employees and I trade lots of 'em.

Always need more books! But not until Fall when I (hopefully) have a classroom to put them in  ^_^

The districts out here can wait all the way until the end of summer to announce job placements, so we'll see...

I've got a suggestion for you collection: Anthem

Interesting site I found while searching for info on the book. Ayn Rand
Lesson plans and teaching ideas for Anthem
- site is called Web English Teacher.

Oh, and there are plenty of free ebook copies of Anthem online.

Betcha the dictionary was banned in North Carolina as well

Nope - just checked - but they did ban The Living Bible in 1986.

(note. This list is not up to date. This list is and I didn't know but "Banned Book Week" is coming up soon! I hope we all find something to read off the list!)

There is also a free download of Common Sense by Thomas Paine in the lower left hand corner.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banned_Books_Week

I actually have a Manga which seems to be banned from import into my state, but it got in here anyways and I bought it. I don't really get why Higurashi was banned but Elfin Lied wasn't...

I might be willing to trade some banned books in PDF format...
I have 3 fictional works and a bunch of how-to manuals for DIY
tree stump removal, excavation, small construction projects,
basement chemistry, and other stuff like that. The Banned Fiction
is Unintended Consequences, V for Vendetta, and Alongside Night.
