Linux Gives PoL New Look!
« on: May 25, 2009, 12:21:25 PM »

Mama is now using Puppy Linux (Sea Monkey) to update The Price of Liberty. This is presenting some interesting challenges, since it has been done in MS Dreamweaver since the beginning. So, starting next week most likely, a whole new template will be created for the main pages - a few at a time. Eventually, only the archives will be using the old form.

Please take a look at the new pages and let me know what you think. The index has been partially redone this week, and more changes will appear next week. I look forward to hearing your reaction. What can I do to make it better? :)

Hi MamaLiberty

You might look into bluefish also, it seems popular.

I haven't tried it myself yet, (I'm still depending on text editor, gimp and filezilla, tried dreamweaver a long time ago but didn't stay with it).

Good luck!

MammaLibtery, Would you ever consider a CMS, That is a content management system. This would allow for dynamic pages that were easy to update and a templating system that would allow you to change the look of all the pages at once? Your host will need to support both PHP and MySql however most do, It is very easy to set up a system so do not be put off by that.

This site is a good one for looking into it:
http://www.opensourcecms.com/

I am currently up to my eyes at work however I will provide whatever help I can.

Just a thought.

Thanks so much! Yes, I have thought of it. It remains a possibility if the site content becomes more dynamic. As it is, what I have fits into the limited hosting I can afford and does the job. It was just way past time for a facelift. :) The new index page will be quite a shock to everyone who has followed me for more than a few years.

Puppy and Sea Monkey have cut the time needed to update my site so much that I stand in awe.

I hope everyone will take a look on Monday and then let me know what they think. I built that page from scratch, all by myself in the Sea Monkey composer and I'm quite proud of it. But don't worry about hurting my feelings! I want only to improve it.

Thanks for your interest!!

All new index page up now. I kept the "parchment" background because the page looked terrible to me bare white, but I'd be interested in comments about a possible change. I don't want a monochrome background at all. The problem with the current one is that it looks a sick PINK in some browsers. EEEWWWWW!!!! LOL

I noticed that pinkish tint some time ago,  and figured what the hey,  you being of the female persuasion and all...

I just tried loading the page,  and one thing that jumps out at me is that I have a horizontal scroll bar,  with stuff off the right side of the screen.  This did *not* happen last time I visted the site.  I normally only see this when some page has one or more objects that exceed the number of pixels my browser puts on the screen at one time,  but I don't see anything of that sort readily visible on the page this time.

Looking at the page source I see the left side stuff in a table spec'd at "width=100%" which doesn't seem right since the other table for the rest of the stuff is spec'd at 80% -- the first one maybe oughta be 20%?  I've also seen pages where the whole page was one big table with the smaller tables contained within it,  each "<td>" element specifying the width of the table inside the bigger one.

I also see one smallish table in there that specifies elements in terms of the number of pixels,  rather than as a percentage.  I don't normally do this and don't think it's a good idea.

If you want,  feel free to email me (much faster than posting back in here) and I can review any changes and we could kick this around some more.

There are LOTs of issues with the new Sea Monkey composer, and I'm dealing with them as fast as I can. :) Still looking at other utility suits that might be better for my purpose than Sea Monkey as well. That's going to take some time, and I won't even be here much the next three weeks.

The tables have been changed for the new template and should be good. 100% for the top and bottom, 10% for each sidebar and 80% for the center of the body of the page. Height and width designations for the page have been removed. Cell padding, etc. is set for minimum tolerated by the program.

I'll have to go looking on line for a new "background" image. So far, have not seen anything I want - and no telling what it would look like in other browsers anyway. Not sure what to do about it, but I don't want any monochrome background, and certainly not white. I'll just have to see what I can find. :)

Thanks for all the input!!!

I received an email from a reader who had the same scrolling issues with the index page. He didn't mention any others. I asked, and he said his resolution was 800 X 600 - which would certainly explain why he had to scroll as far as I can see.

So, if any of you are having that problem... is it because of your resolution or my page? :)  We have not defined the width or length, so each person's browser can load it as their defaults dictate. Sometimes the composer doesn't LEAVE this undesignated, so we're working on THAT problem too. sigh

I'm at 1024x768 here,  for whatever that's worth.

If the end result of that composer (heh,  mis-typed that as "composter" first time through :-) isn't what you want it to be then there's always fixing it with a text editor.  I use kwrite to do all my html,  start to finish.
