THE FEDS (OH, THE SURPRISE!) WANT NEW WEB-TAPPING POWERS.

It won't be far off, if they can feasibly do it, where the entire phone networks will have to comply to easier and more efficient tapping access.  I've already read numerous articles about such suggestions from mainstream news sources. Most anything that a criminal or an "outlaw" has at its disposal will be shut hard.  A few more bombings like what we saw in spain and the Stasi will look like Santa Clause.  If a criminal can use an anonymous phone to avoid an embarrasing credit check by the little kid at Walmart the thinking is, terrorists can use it too.   This means EVERYTHING that makes our lives easy folks.

To add insult to injury, the consumer will pay for the technology to strip away the
consumer's privacy. If I can take a short flight to Hyperbole*, it's like requiring a widow
to pay for the bullets that killed her husband before she can claim the body.

A possible work around, though: use a trusted program to encrypt your letters outside
of email packages, etc., then either attach them or cut-and-paste before sending. TPTB
will know it's encrypted, but won't have a back door without being obvious.

As for phone networks, you're just a little behind the times. Several years, in fact. Check out CALEA: Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act. In and of itself, there is no such thing as an anonymous phone any longer in the US. At any given moment, _any_ phone in the US can be tapped. And it doesn't require a court order (even when done "officially" and not just by some bored 'crat looking for thrills). Fortunately, there are still steps you can take to prevent your deing conected to a particular phone call.

The only question is whether the goons can get away with extending that power to data networks. The FCC, by deciding that its phone regulating power includes VOIP, slid the foot in the door to allow the Fan Belt Inspectors to stick a Carnivore machine in every ISP.

Exactly, and as tech gets better battles for what we have now will rage, there is an add on to the act you speak of both here and in the states the Law enforcement communities have managed to push through into laws, something the data transmission companies will have to pay heavily for- that means us..  Gee, I remember- oh what glorious times they were- when I could walk into or send for something called a cash card put out by AAA in the states and American Express all over.  The AAA card had a cash limit of 10,000, used as cash anywhere Visa or MC was accepted.  Soon, withing say a year this was halted.  This was in 2001.  The reasons given for the cut offf, mind you I still had money loaded, was that a terrorist could used the card to funnel and launder money.  At that time, my money was tight and it provided me a great service when it came to those necessities that "only a credit card could do".  Mind you, you still can wait in line at a AAA office and load away, but you'd better fork over you identification and be ready at a moments notices to have your funds frozen if you dare to change phone numbers.  I believe Claire said, whoever these hyennas are up in the rhealms of congress or parliment are, they want every bit of modest freedom to be in their control.  They want this information shared and want everyone to cross the roads of life Only when the man on the pole turns white.

FBI Wishlist

The thing about these things is that there are plenty of ways to circumvent them and it just costs us all our mortgages and gas money.  Many of these projects- see DARPA spend millions on research, dump the programs and then send them off to the private sector who was in bed with the Feds in the first place- see MATRIX.  Even the sheep are seeing through these smoke and mirror fear mongering press releases.  However, even if 10 percent gets implemented by our local, DHS, and Mounted thugs, it's serious business for freedoms of all kinds.  It's just tiring trying to thwart the neverending bombardment of fancy, and Hip Acronyms.  Here in Canada they just give you straight double speak and call it the Healthy People Safety Act or the Help Everyone Eat and Live act (made up to make a point)  Easier for people to see through.

Nobody seems to mention CALEA within the wiretapping debates anymore...

That's the little tiny thing, back in the 90's, which enabled the switches in the first place.  How we go around in circles and memory holes.
